Around The World Row

Great work on the PB John.

I am on work-related travel right now so I am a little behind on keeping the google earth file up to date. Don't worry, your meters will show up, but they may show up in bulk for last few days.

I have found a nice Concept2. I think a model C at the hotel I am staying at, so a nice way to keep putting on the kliks.

Unfortunately a few meetings, and then right out side of my door, 5280 feet of lift-accessed vertical, so I have to keep myself amused between meetings.
(Whistler, for those of you who can't figure it out by the vertical).

Tough work, but somebody has to do it....

Keep on rowin', eh

Jim

I see on your profile that you're an x-runner and are using rowing for cross-training. If you're still into running at all, the runners thread is a lot of fun. Are you into other sport (s) as well? I passed through your area in my younger days. I remember some very nice country in your parts.

Thanks for the welcome. I liked the Trans-Atlantic row and thought it'd be nice to see some of the rest of the world. And, this was also a good excuse to play with Google Earth.
I stopped running for good - I think I have stopped running for good about 7 times now, but I think this really is it. Something always seems to break down, and I'm now old enough to care about tomorrow. These days, I'm fine with the indoor exercises to maintain general fitness: rowing, ski-machine, and bike, combined with weights.
Eh Dan, sounds like an excellent fitness program. Three of the best sports around! If you ever do decide to give running a go again (please don't think I'm trying to push you that way ) the concensus seems to be that rowing (with working the quads a lot) seems to protect the knees. But it probably doesn't do much for ankles, hips . . . Are you interested at all in racing on the erg? If so, you should join us in the CTC. The only rowing racing I've done is by posting 2K and 5K times on the rankings. This year's postings were a little slower than last year's because I wasn't as inclined to push as hard for a time. But I don't know anything about the CTC.
Can you tell me how to find out more?

After your post, I did a little poking around and wound up at www.c2ctc.com, which seemed like the right place. What I think I'm seeing is that somebody makes up a different challenge for each month, and people post their best times for that challenge. And it seems the team's placing is the average of the team's individual members.
And it would seem that the only teams that are actually competing to win are the ones with a complete boat of 5 (according to the rules of what kind of members can make up a boat of 5).

So I guess it doesn't hurt to post a time that might bring down your team's average if that team doesn't have a complete boat. And I guess that if there are enough members to make a complete boat or maybe more than one boat, someone must be deciding the best way to arrange those boatmates to get as many teams into the highest placings.

But I couldn't be sure if this was on-your-honor input, like the rankings, or if this was some RowPro kind of thing (which I don't have). And I couldn't tell if you could enter another time if it was faster than your previously entered time.
You figured a lot of it out Dan, I'll try to fill in the blanks. First, you don't need to have Rowpro for this and it is on the honour system. Each month there is a different challange. This month it is rowing 300 metres and you can only put in that time if you row it during that month. The whole thing is designed for participation, hence all of the different boats for some of the larger teams. Each boat has five people in it and it has to have one lightweight rower and one female. You can have more lightweights and females, but that is the minimum. If there is more than one boat then it automatically puts the fastest people in the first boat. You can try the challenge as many times during the month as you like and can put in new times if you get faster. Some people (I think they might have a screw loose) even try it daily . It's a lot of fun because we encourage each other, is another goal to shoot for and it helps make us faster. Each month a different team gets to decide what the challenge will be. There is a rowing site similar to this one in the UK where they have a thread on the CTC and I believe that they mentioned that we might get to choose the challenge in August. We've been having a bit of debate about what we should pick, but we have lots of time to decide. Maybe we should have a beer every 1000metres and see how far we get . Actually, maybe not. That might send some mixed messages to the younger generation . Even though it is a team event, it's still like the regular rankings in that you are really just trying to improve on your own times. So far, we've only been able to fill one boat (we've only done it for two months), I'm hoping this month we'll get an Eh Team boat 2 or more . Just a tip for this month if you decide to try it. I found that with these really short races it's important to be well warmed up. The last time I tried this I rowed 5 or 6 k and right in the middle of that I put in 2 X 200 meters at a fast pace (not quite all out.) Then when I did it I turned the damper up from my normal 3 up to 6. I've read that some people crank it up to 10, but I'm not strong enough for that. Hope that helps, feel free to ask more if questions come up. John. After your post, I did a little poking around and wound up at www.c2ctc.com, which seemed like the right place. Thanks John. I'll look into some of these challenges.
And I'll look forward to someone picking the beer per K challenge - not sure how long I'd last though.

Tried CTC again today.
4 hours sleep, weighed in at 140 lb.(light even for me), Hr was 10 bpm higher during warm up and...
1/10th sec better.
I guess that means I'll be able to go faster next time!

Dan pointed out something people may not have thought of. Your time cannot slow the time of a full boat. So give it a try and join the fun. 8)

Cheers,
Kirk

Three so far today and Shannon did it earlier today but is at work now and hasn't had time to put hers on there yet. Kirk, you are cranking (even without sleep ) and I don't recognize the name of the other CTCer today (is that Dan?) Another job well done!

I'm back home tomorrow team and should be able to update the google earth file. It will show up as one massive leap with everything dated on tomorrow's date.

I had a lot of unanticipated problems with our rowbot while on the road and was unable to get him out of the gates.

Whistler has been great. I found something to do between meetings

Unfortunately not much rowing. A nice Concept2 machine here in the fitness room and I was able to get in 15k over the week, but what with meetings, skiing, great dinners and visiting friends.......

Keep on rowin', eh.

Jim

The Eh! Team CTC boat: Kajnsooner isn't me. I do plan to put in an attempt at this challenge, but not this weekend - just recovering from a little bug. I think next weekend.

Eh! y'all. I changed my mind and took a crack at the CTC sooner than I expected. So we have at least one full boat. I guess watching the Olympics on TV inspired me. I never did a sprint distance before. Until now, my fastest pace was when I was racing a 2K. I didn't realize how foreign it would be to me. I actually posted one time, and then thought it was a little disappointing. And since I wasn't even tired, I tried again 5 minutes later and posted another time about 1 sec faster. Still didn't feel that I put in my best effort, but it's a start. Today, my back is reminding me just a little bit that it wasn't used to that.

I've tried doing it twice in one workout and haven't been able to get through the second attempt. I think it's one of those "mind over matter" things . It's great that we now have a full boat and there is lots of time yet to get at least another one floating. I know what you mean about your back. The last time I did the CTC (Wen.) I also did a long workout after. I woke with a stiff back on Thursday and it's still not quite right. I can still row, but I'm planning on going easy until it is back to 100%.

Great rowin', hosers.
I am back in Yellowknife and I have updated the Google Earth file. We are smoking across Algeria now. We are over half way from Rome to Dakar.

Algeria is not all that friendly to row boats.

So,
Keep on rowin',eh

Jim

Great work on the CTC Jim! How did your back fair with the attempt. I'm staying off of the erg for a bit. When I did mine last week I pushed it way to hard doing three workouts on the same day and now my back is sore. You think a person would learn, eh? So I'm going to enjoy our un-seasonably warm weather and get in a bit of runing outside and unpack the roadbike and hook it up to the wind trainer until there are no more twinges. Now we just need to get some more people to fill that second boat. My two kids will probably do it later this week. They will definately be cellar dwellers, but they'll be floating! John
