PP week 6 day 1

Made the huge mistake of ignoring the warning when I switched the PM5 on that the battery was too low to use the USB - wasn't sure what it meant but thought I'd carry on anyway as I was also using ErgData so thought it wouldn't matter!

1000m warmup

4 x 1000m / 5:00r (goal 1:46. Previous avg 1:46.6)

1000m 1:44.8 r31
1000m 1:44.8 r31
1000m 1:44.X rXX
1000m 1:45.0 rXX

No real cooldown as quickly discovered that PM5 / USB / ErgData hadn't recorded my session!!! Got massively frustrated, tried finding it on the USB and the internal memory but got nothing. Phone battery died. Plugged PM5 into laptop to try and see if that helped but it wouldn't even recognise the USB. Charged phone up but no record on ErgData.

Eventually the USB memory showed the workout as a 2 x 1000m and lost the rest.

I know for sure the third rep was under 1:45 ...I think 1:45.5 but doesn't really matter.

The last rep definitely showed 1:45.0 at the end so may have shown on the summary screen as 1:44.9 ...but either way it was a shame I couldn't go faster on the last. First 500m was at 1:43ish but I very nearly handled down right at the end. Faded fast in the last 100m and was surprised the final time was still under my goal at all.

After much googling discovered I not actually need to use a USB at all so I've wiped all the previous owner's workouts and will start again just using the internal memory and see how that goes.

Not to be a party pooper, but I'm starting to wonder if a bit more brevity in our postings may be in order. We are ripping through pages pretty quickly at the moment.

PP Beginners Week 9 Optional Day 4

8000m. Target 2:13.3. Actual 2:15.0. Embarrassed to post this really. Seem to be going backwards! Didn't even feel that hard, just no energy.

@Bloodbuzz Corio Thanks for the 30’ SB congrats Rohan. The waterfall was a barrel of fun. Very nice 6K "hill climb" you did, with the exponential wattage increases every 1,000 meters. Picturesque.

@mdpfirrman Thanks, Mike. I hope you have a wonderful vacation even if it doesn’t include any rowing :)

@S-man Just my opinion Sanz, but unless Planner Pete specifically says to aim for a specific rating or rating range, I’d just go with the flow and settle into whatever the free rate sweet spot is. Nice work. About 2 seconds decrease in pace, which is huge for the same effort.

@paul45. Precision rating and pacing on the 7,400m, Paul. Squeezing every last drop out is hard to do, with a lemon or a boatman.

@Pie Man Loved the monologue, Piers. You had a full measure of rowing, even if it wasn’t in the precise bullseye of your targets. Thanks for the faith in my future cycle results.. I’m holding back, toward conservative targets, in hopes that I can hang in there longer for future cycles. Now that I’ve finally discovered “structured training,” that’s the most important thing it seems. :)

@Slacker Thanks Ben. When I was new to indoor rowing, it was pointed out to me by experienced OTW (and indoor) rowers, that my rating was way too high. I’ve been working to keep my rating lower, like a good rower. Except in all-out sprints where there has to be a bit of flailing on the railing to avoid trailing. So I think the fact that you are starting out with low rating is good. Good work on the 8K, at r20.

@aussieluke Nice, hard work on the 4x1000m R5:00, Luke. If you don’t keep your PM5 connected to a computer USB port to keep its battery charged, you could always use one of those portable USB chargers.

@G-dub I know what you mean Glenn. One thing that helps keep things more efficient, is if posters who don’t yet know how can learn to edit material in what they quote from someone else, so the quoted part displayed only includes what he’s addressing in his post. But - if people have monologues like Piers’ about chatting with a lady being detrimental to his rowing etc, that’s refreshing and I don’t mind scrolling through more pages due to that. :)

@mudgeg That’s the way it goes sometimes, Gordon. The main thing is that you did it! :) The day that I did 15K extremely slowly and Jack made amazed comments about it, was a very low energy day for me. I’ve decided to shorten my recovery day distances a bit, since then. Your 8K @ 2:15 was quite respectable and healthy!

Oct 28 PP Cycle 1 Week 3 Day 6
8K recovery session with no warmup or warm down
Targets in order of priority:
1. HR less than 75% HRmax 2. Rating 22 3. Pace: 2:18
Straps loose, DF 125
NOTE: Disregard the reported pace for the last split in the RowPro session report and chart. I’m using a beta version of RowPro 5 for the Mac and it is calculating the pace for the last split by using the elapsed time for the last split, but the distance for the previous splits, which are longer than the last split.

Nice work Sanz / Luke on the intervals. I hope that works for you Luke. That's a darn fine effort not to know exactly what it was. That would be frustrating.

Last work today for me for a while - SS - 50' @ 2:13. Pushed a little bit harder than normal for a SS for me knowing it was my last one in a while.

Luke - awesome job. That session tells the truth about where you are my friend.

Mike - if I haven't missed you - have a great holiday. I am jealous.

Don't remind me! It seems like it should be doable but doing it is another matter.

Cheers, though the first 1000m was relatively easy, the second not so much.

Not sure exactly how this workout is supposed to translate to 2k time but I guess I will try and find out later this week - which will be the end of two, 3-week cycles.

It is 2K +1. For me it's the most reliable predicter - but then again I have to finish the session at some point! That was how it worked out for you last test on your 1:46.5s. I'd say be confident you are under 7:00 and go for it.

1000m cooldown

PM5 with no USB, and ErgData = worked perfectly

So I "should" be able to do 2k at 1:44...

Guess I'll find out in a few days
