Piers writes, referencing my pacing failure on 5x1.5:
Ouch Jack, do you know what went wrong with those two reps? Everything else was on target.
The obvious proximate cause was big pace drop from rep 1 to rep 2. Paid the price in 3 and 4! I think the root cause is cumulative fatigue plain and simple. Flushed in the face after the first rep; heart rate 3-4 bpm higher than previous (end rate 5bpm below max); unable to rate up progressively in 3 and 4 but managed ~130m end sprints in both which just barely kept those two under 5k pace. Rallied slightly In the last (sr26) but a sad and painful affair. May come back. May not. Today is another tomorrow. Holding the SS to minimum prescribed this week as per Mike's premonitory instruction. Not sick yet. Maybe that's next on the list? Hope not.

Hot tamale train 10k, Piers!

Very nice 10K Piers! Great PB!

Jack - you ground it out and finished! Feel good about that and take it really easy on the SS work.

I felt miserable yesterday all day after two days rowing in a row. Took yesterday off and feeling MUCH better today. Though I'm tempted to row again today, I think I'll take it easy this week and try to join back up on Sunday.

PP 3.1.3 4x1500 5'r
Previous 1:51.9 r26
Target 1:51.5
01:50.7 r27
01:50.4 r26
01:50.4 r27
01:50.5 r27
01:49.0 r27
Avg 1:50.2 r26
Max HR 176

Very happy about that one, went off on the first one a bit too fast but was feeling good so went with it even though I think I've got a bit of a sore throat coming on. Only 0.1 behind by PB for this session from 4 years ago which was looking impossible the first time round.

You are killing me John! Good news is I can't come close to that one! Great session. Very clear in its execution.

@ Piers that 10k is awesome! To crack the 40' milestone with such a hard push at the end must have been super satisfying - and deservedly so! Congrats!

@ Mike glad to hear you're feeling better today - hope that continues

@ Paul - looks like that 8k was smooth as silk! Good luck on the 3x2k tomorrow

@ John those 1500s are starting to get pretty serious at that pace! Very quick indeed. Hope the sore throat does not eventuate.

PP 3.1.5 Hard Distance - 6,000m, 1:56.7 pace (23:20.6) A hair slower than most of the other hard distance pieces I've done so far - may have contributed to moderate HR (ave 172 max 186):

Even pacing throughout and managed 2 streaks of 16 consecutive strokes at the same pace (1 at 1:57 and 1 at 1:56), and another 2 streaks of 14 at 1:57.

1:58.7 500m 1:58.7 209 1018 26

2 minute rest is a ball-buster with this many intervals for me. Holding down 1:53 on last one and hit the wall at 150m and coasted to the finish. At least I can average and use that next time.

@ben - just couldn't catch you man
@john - woo hoo serious wheels
@piers - just wow
@paul45 - I go flat out on 8000m and beat you by a tad, while you are half-asleep on the ERG ! Apparently I have some work to do.

Started off on Week 6 Day 2 and had a bit of a disaster. Aim was 3 x 2000m in a target pace of 2:08.9/2:06.0 which were my times for the 2 x 2000m of Week 3. Anyway started off fine with first interval at 2:08.3, planning for 2:06 and 2:05 on second and third respectively.

Hit 600m to go on the second, well on target and winding up when one of the older lady gym members speaks to me and asks me to stop. I was completely in the zone and didn't really get what she was saying. She then tries to squeeze round the back of the erg, doesn't quite make it and falls over knocking me clean off.

Turns out the guy on the treadmill behind had been running hard and managed to somehow move it within a couple of inches of the back of the erg. So that all took some time to sort out and I cut my losses and bailed out of the session.

One question though, because of tonight's abortive session and work commitments I may not be able to do the two optional sessions this week. If I were to miss one should it be the 5k or the 6 x 500m?

Pete 3.1.4
UT1 SS
8k
Df120
HR capped @ top UT1 (148bpm)
130 av.

Staying under 75% HRR was the goal but broke thru the HR cap last 2k so 76%. Recovery should not be a problem If I decide to take another shot at best time 30' tomorrow.

Piers, Paul, Rohan, and Jack: Nice distance pieces!

John: Very nice 1500s. I just wish I could do that pace as a 500m right now.

Mike: Patience. You'll be back in the thick of things soon enough.

Tim: You still shaved off over 4 seconds from last week. You still have me on the distance pieces though.

Gordon: Sorry your workout was interrupted today. I worry about something similar when my dog walks near me. As for tomorrow, what do you feel you need more work on? The 500m intervals are good practice for next week day 2, but at least for me, I'd take the distance work. At this stage I need to get in as many meters as I can.

Gordon: It's fortunate that you weren't injured. I would do the 5000 if I had to choose one. I tend to feel rested and ready to go the day after the distance pieces. After some of the intervals I take my rest day, especially if I've gone all out. If you do the 5000 you can jump right into week 7 ready to go.

Completed my optional 5000 last night in a 2:01.3 average. The last 230 was all out with the goal being all strokes below 1:40. Just managed to pull it off. Now I see a sub 40 minute 10000 by Piers. Wow.

5 x 1500 5'R last time 1:52.5. I have to confess that I had no idea I would be down at these sort of splits. It is sort of unnerving. I wonder if my HR strap needs a clean. It always ends up at 185 on these endurance intervals!

I've been resisting asking this question, but kick me around the schoolyard if you must. Trust you guys way more than the population at large.

Should I get a HR monitor?

Only thing I am worried about is it bothering me while I row. I'd row naked (eeww!) if I could, I can't stand anything other than the minimal clothing. I've read a bit on them, but maybe someone can explain to me the benefits up and above the stats provided by the PM5 it gives me.

I am looking at a Polar H7, advice is welcome.

Thanks.

At some stage, yes. Now? Depends what you are doing and want to acheive.

A HR monitor will essentially tell you how hard you are training. Example: you might think you are taking it pretty easy when doing a 10k at a comfortable place. But strap on a heart rate monitor and you might see your HR is 160-170 and rising, indicating you are actually working well above your aerobic zone and would likely benefit from some easier work.

I used mine for a long time while focussing on getting as many easy steady state metres in as possible - to make sure I was going slow enough and to track any improvement - or not.

Now while I am on the Pete Plan, I am not using the HRM as I am focusing on the split and stroke rate and doing each workout to a chosen pace target - so watching HR as well will likely only distract me from the goal.

Once they're on, you usually hardly notice them. The only thing with rowing is they tend to sit right at the spot where the handle will contact your chest, but you can actually lower the strap much further than you think and it will still work fine.

My recommendation on a strap is the Wahoo Tickr - it is I think the same price or cheaper than most others, is dual band ANT+ and bluetooth so will work with any machine, running watch, iphone etc etc and is very well made and has none of the problems that plague Garmin and Polar straps.

Tim, if you are in tune with yourself as it relates to hard efforts vs easy efforts vs moderate efforts, in my opinion there is no need. HR info can be useful if you need to cap effort, but that can be done by paying attention to breathing, recovery, PE, and pace/watts as a percentage of max effort, etc. It also can be used to make sure you are working hard enough, which to me can be understood via pace or watts and PE. I used to wear one running and riding bikes but now enjoy just doing those a little more "naked", since our erg monitor stares us in the face with all kinds of information that we can get obsessed over. It's nice to just go and enjoy.

Wicked 5X1500s from Glenn and John! Great job, guys.

I'm still suffering a bit with a chest cold. I took yesterday off, but thought a little sweat might be helpful today. I rowed another 10K SS session at 1:58.3 and 18 spm. I'm not sure if these SS rows are helping or hurting, but I felt like I was kind of on a roll and I'm disappointed to be missing out on the action! I'm still hoping to hit the 8X500 and 5X1500 later this week.
