Yes, tough to get a team around. Every month the best 8 out of ten count, its 8 months, which if you do it seriously is no small matter. So you need 10 members who are serious. Not scoring a month will ruin the ranks. Individuel you need a score every month. Unreal how much is going on in this thread now. As far as a team challenge, I'm open to it but only if you absolutely need numbers. I think I'm personally strapped to the gills right now with work / working out. Plus, I'd never be under 75kg!!

Gordon - agree with Paul on the distance rows. If you're finding them difficult, don't worry. Perhaps it's that you picked too challenging of a distance to start with. The distance rows (whether PP or BPP), especially the optional days, should be recovery rows more or less. Let pace on the distance pieces "come to you". Dean didn't start out rowing half marathons sub 2:00 pace. Gradually his HR came down on his SS rows and he gradually upped the pace. Dean does a TON of UT2 work and all that SS work pays off. Too many rows that are hard just gets you injured.
Luke - Loved the post on KBs. Thanks! A lot of what you said just kind of confirms my sentiment. I just mostly love S&S because the fast / slow fiber work combined and the efficiency. I'm all about efficiency / time. That's what I love about rowing - bang for the buck - working muscles while doing cardio. Also what I love about KBs. I honestly don't have either the knee or the time to do something like a 5 X 5 and sit there and wait and wait to do the next sets. Would much rather bang it out, be done and move on. I can do the S&S in around 30 minutes 3 X a week and be in as good as shape as I'll ever need (and improve my rowing too). Completely agree about Getups. Should be done very slowly and focus on technique (using lighter weights if necessary).
I have a 20 lb (8kg?) KB at home. Think I'll just buy the 24kg one. I've done a lot of one arm swings, but I'm starting out mostly with two arm ones now on the S&S. Agree with you on the importance of the drive / fast twitch (and how it suffers with one arm). My gym has every size and I mostly use the 50lb one (closest to the 24 kg one) there for swings and the 35 lb (16 kg one) for getups.

Paul: thanks for the advice. I am sure my problem yesterday was a combination of ill omens combined with trying to do a record pace (for me) on a longish row the day after a vey challenging 3 x 1000m.
Mike: likewise many thanks. Again, don't think it was the distance as I did it easily a few days before. It's all about learning when to go solid and steady and when to force the pace and I just got that wrong.

Sneaked in my BPP W2D3 session this afternoon. I know I won't be able to have another session until at least Monday, probably Tuesday, so it had to be today really. I'd rather have a day off after the intervals session yesterday but, alas, not to be!

5500m @ 2.17.0 r 23

The overall average of 2:17 is very slightly misleading - until the last 300m I was at 2.18 (my target) and, knowing I won't row again until next week, I allowed myself to get carried away, with a free rate escalating gradually in to the mid 30s (for the last 30 seconds or so). I'm sure there are plenty of reasons why I should have just kept going at 2.18; in those last 30 seconds I pushed myself harder than I can remember in the last 10 years!
Without a day of rest between sessions, today felt really hard, especially in the middle. My lats were reminding me they were tired and I had to constantly remind myself that the key is technique. Most of the time that goes without saying, but today I was mentally slipping.
Keeping 2:18 was tough - I had to let it go out to 2:20+ a couple of times just to recover a little before sustaining 2:18 again. Maybe I'm pushing myself too hard on Days 1 and 3? Experimented in my warm up with a lower DF. Anything under my usual 125 just didn't feel right, forcing me above a 24 rating that I wanted to as a maximum.
Few days off now to recover!

Perhaps a timely reminder of what a 2k test is really like after all these intervals giving me ideas above my station.

I admire you for picking the handle back up. I wouldn't assume anything about it as it relates to the progress you are making. Bad days happen and 10' sounds like a journey to hell.
