Steady state is as done by:
Professionals, every day all day, except Sundays, which is why amateurs wanted nothing to do with them;
Swimmers who need to do anything over an hour, such as swim back across their lake;
Oarsmen when they find they have to come back home against wind and maybe tide;
Hunters who have to chase their dinner all day long.
It has a double effect: endurance and technique, so is unbeatable.
What is steady state?

Re: What is steady state?
The problem is people use the term "SS" to refer to workouts at varying intensity levels. Junior kids are notorious for thinking they are doing SS when in reality they are at intensities way beyond SS.
From a physiological point of view, I think you'll find there's fairly good consensus on what actually constitutes a steady-state workout. Using intensities like UT2 (1.0-1.5 mmol of blood lactate) and UT1 (1.5-2.0 mmol of blood lactate), we can confine our definitions and be much more precise in our language.
