I want nothing to do with the HD discussion but it was me, I'm fairly certain, who called it the Ed Break originally. Edward described it but didn't name it.

I know the 4x750m is not a difficult day for most of you but it got the best of me today. I worked through the 6x500m at 1:48.4avg last week. Today I struggled to 1:47.3/1:47.8/1:50.7/1:52.8. The extra 250m on the same amount of rest were more of a difference than I thought they would be.

Trying to catch up - tons of stuff has gone on in the thread - been busy with the family over the weekend.

Barry -- I'll be honest, not surprised this was a struggle for you - your longer row yesterday was a really fast pace. Perhaps a bit too fast. It's a common mistake. If I remember right, you did 8000m at 2:11. That's pretty fast for a SS day. Might have gassed yourself more yesterday than today?? Also, 750 is an odd distance. Might want to use the pace calculator to get an idea of pace next time perhaps (the one on the log homepage). It would be hard to judge how much difference between the 500 and the 750 to use.

To compare, my speed intervals are a tad faster than yours - I did 8666 today in 40 minutes for like a 2:17 or so pace (not even close to your speed yesterday on you SS). I know I'll need that tomorrow for my intervals. Live and learn. Nice job finishing it today.

Glenn - nice waterfall!

Joe - incredibly fast as always.

Jack - nice execution on your waterfall.

John - Very nice 4 X 1000. It is a brutal workout. Your negative splits looked better than mine!

Rohan - very nice waterfall. Your paces / negative splits were impressive.

Joseph / Gordon - nice sessions!

I'm not sure where I fall on the "HD" discussion. I'm fortunate enough I've never had one. I've had a serious slow down in pace but went all out to get there too. Not too many massive flame outs recently. I think as long as you give it your all (even if that means taking two to three deep breaths to ensure you're getting enough oxygen) that's OK. I think the idea is just letting it all out sensibly on these sessions. I think everyone is certainly doing that!

I'm still trying to figure out what my pacing should be. I'm also trying to follow Paul's advice and cut a few seconds off. I'm trying to work on pacing as well. A lot going into my sessions but I feel like I'm learning. My goal for today was 2:20 (I have been up since 4:30 am so quiet tired already.) I managed to make my goal but my spm is all over the place, I'm really trying to stabilize that. I looked down halfway through the session and found my machine on level 5 and I have been trying to work on 4. I changed that and it helped me stabilize my spm a little. I will look first from now on. Thanks for the advice guys.

Everyone is really killing it. Thanks for letting me be apart of this. I'm reading along, I just don't have much to add as far as knowledge. I can always help someone else later though. Almost got my dad talked into rowing.

You are probably right. I had 2 days off going into yesterday's row. I was fresh and it felt easy. Today I paid, live and learn I guess. Thanks for the input.

Nick, you missed your goal by .2". Don't get too tense over two tenths. The fatigue of a long day influences your energy level no question. Your rate progression is very much the norm for new rowers and for some with a bit of experience (me). Nothing to struggle against. Body is trying to maintain pace and naturally ups the frequency of strokes to compensate the loss of power per stroke. You're doing fine.

I charge my energy banks for the interval workouts and let the longer pieces forage on their own. For example, I did my PP steady state recovery 8k yesterday at 6AM. Today I waited until 3:30PM to do the PP interval "waterfall. 32.5 hours on recharge is full batt. Working stiffs don't have that luxury. I have and I use it to advantage. Eat smart, get adequate sleep, schedule the best you can. Better to skip a session than drag yourself down. Don't get your knickers in a twist over any advice offered here except to put every bit of it to the test and see if it works for you. If it doesn't, try another flavor. :)

Average worked out to be 1:37.9 at 28 spm. I did this workout in June after doing interval sessions for a couple of months and hit 1:37.9 at 27 spm. I remember that it felt like a bear. However, I never felt in trouble at all today, so that's good. Time to crank it up a bit for cycle two (after the dreaded waterfall...)

That's actually why I missed my workout on Sunday. It was a beautiful day and the river was calling me :)

At this stage in my training I'm only concentrating on full seconds. So based on that I meet my goal 100% :D thanks for your support jack, I try to learn from seasoned people like y'all. I don't have any knickers sir. :D :D :D

Is it not interesting that one can positively split variable intervals of decreasing distance and produce a pace average faster than that produced by splitting them negatively? Case in point: Jack's waterfall with positive splits: 2:08.2 av. pace. By the book negative using same pace progression: 2:08.5 av. pace? Yes, probably not. :lol:

Lots of great training here guys! Been away for the last 4 days and have missed a couple of sessions from the end of last week :( Decided to do the 4x1k this morning and then the waterfall tomorrow to get back on track .

PP W3D1 4 x 1000 r5' Pace should be 2k+1, but feeling lethargic after too much eating, drinking and no exercise while away. This is also an intimidating session so decided to pace it at 2:06-07

Remembered why I hate this session so much - energy levels just dropped 500m into each interval :shock: - and the pacing within each interval was all over the place. In fact I felt better holding a faster split on the last. Maybe it took me that long to get warmed up or perhaps it was the 'last-interval' effect. Still, I'm looking forward to getting past this week so I can start the 3 week cycle again and start bringing the times for each session down.
