Thanks, shame they don't have a HR monitor wired up at the gym as based on PE I'm pretty sure I'd have got a new max HR there. The physiological power of those whole numbers is pretty strong. Legs still buzzing an hour later. I'm struggling to visualize doing 2 of those back to back at that pace, let alone faster, but early days and plenty of time to go before I'll need to try that out.Bloodbuzz Corio wrote: John they are some properly cracking 1k intervals there - great stuff to get the last one under 1:46!

Thanks John. Impressive splits by you and the crew finishing up their 4x1000m pieces in the last couple days. That seems like a lot of pain. What does "HD" stand for in your earlier post?JohnAd wrote:Doing 3000m extra in your second week is bold, good luck with the intervals today.Goldenbarry wrote:After a couple of days away from the erg with only a hotel elliptical to maintain fitness, I got back to rowing last night.
Day 1 week 2 for me I went for 8500m at 2:11.2 and a 22 SPM strapless. I then hit the treadmill for a slow 20 minutes to keep my heart rare up. I'm looking forward to today's 4x750m.

The 4x1 is a very reliable 2k predicter, you will be never be far this av and often a tad faster. This session also feels like a 2k does.JohnAd wrote:Thanks, shame they don't have a HR monitor wired up at the gym as based on PE I'm pretty sure I'd have got a new max HR there. Rohan, on one side of the ideal rate argument is sustainability, to wit, IF you can produce X watts at a high frequency, why would you not? The answer is that a power/stroke and rate combination that feels "right" may well produce a less than optimum pace for a given distance. Suppose I'm merely restating what's you already know. Finding the objective optimum combo for say 3k might mean performing several trials at lower rates (26, 27,28) to replace the subjective sweet spot with the highest aggregate power and best pace. Not today of course.
On the other side of the argument for present purposes (2k comp prep) is that the "endurance" in endurance intervals means over reaching on all performance parameters that optimize best pace sustainable at 2k distance rather than at 3k for example. We're supposed to feel stressed so a happy, bread and butter rate of 29 could mean that the discomfort of 34 might well be another path to improved 2k times.
I'm stuck at an optimum sustainability rate of 26spm but even a sorry old poop who can't get out of his own way explores the painful precinct of rate when a test is near. All year to do L4 and 20 rate. Time now for "eveyting youse got."

Which is why I don't do 2ks very oftenhjs wrote:This session also feels like a 2k does.
It's good pain though in that it makes you feel alive to find out where your limits are. HD is Handle Down or stopping the session before the end, I had a few of those in my run through the BPP, mostly when I was trying to come back after illness and hadn't adjusted the pace to take account of lost fitness and went off too fast and just got to the point where I couldn't carry on. What you're supposed to do is just to slow up and always finish but nobody seems to do that in practice.Goldenbarry wrote:That seems like a lot of pain. What does "HD" stand for in your earlier post?

GBarry, 1 HD is a datum. 2 is a trend. 3 is a habit. 4 is addiction to the cessation of pain. The antidote for HD is ALWAYS picking it up again and finishing.

PP Week 2
Day 1
5.5k - 23:41 - 2:09.1 split - 25s/m
My average split from last weeks 5k was 2:10.2. I have very happy I was able to achieve a 1.1 second improvement with a 500m longer row. Good start to the week. Those 750's coming up tomorrow look barf inducing...

Nice work Joseph! I'm going to tackle the 750's this afternoon. I have a feeling I'll be wishing the rest intervals were a bit longer than 2 minutes but I will set the monitor and per Pete, shoot for my average split from the 6x500m from last week. My second goal will be no "HDs" .Phxrow wrote:PP Week 2

Nope, picking up the handle is still a hd in my book, only when you do the full distance for the full time is a row. Stopping or slowing down seriously at some is a HD.jackarabit wrote:GBarry, 1 HD is a datum. 2 is a trend. 3 is a habit. 4 is addiction to the cessation of pain. Wow Joseph, carried your 5k pace thru a longer distance. Who knew? I'm not a big proponent of holding back. Doesn't mean you shouid expect to continue doing that indefinitely but improvement should be welcomed whenever it occurs.

I disagree, Henry. Handle in hand is an intention to go on however weak. HD is a decision not to go on. These guys probably haven't heard of the Peterson Pause (Ed Break) but they will. Serious pace reduction is having respect for the task sufficient to create respect for one's self even in failure. Different books for different kooks.

You defenition is way to easy, you only have to do the distance. The ed break is on the edge, if the softer strokes are to soft its already a Hd.jackarabit wrote:I disagree, Henry. The times I slowed down and picked up the pace I was always pretty pissed. Its always a matter of not willing to endure the pain. Talking about a realistic pacing here, not going off way beyond ones level.
