Jack, I have never rowed strapless before but with all the positive responses I'm going to try tonight for my warm up and cool down. I will get back to you later and let you know how it felt.

Quite pleased to have that over with as legs were still heavy after Wednesday. I skipped SS yesterday and probably won't get time to do any tomorrow so that's week 2 over for me with a SB for the 30'. Will be aiming to get back to 5 days rowing next week.
Nice work John on the 30 timed! That's impressive.

Steady State day today for me (SS work). Felt pretty decent. Mostly worked on my form - all strapless. Around a 2:14 for 55 minutes - roughly 12300 or so. I didn't take a picture but it was 2:14.2 or so I think.

@ Rohan - I enjoy seeing your HR graph on your SS days. Sorry I'm not as detailed on my SS days. If I had RowPro or ErgData and my HR monitor still worked (it keeps dying on me), I'd probably graph mine too. I think that's useful to see. I go more off of feel now that my HRM bit the dust. But anyone starting I'd recommend that they use a HRM to double check. After two years using a HRM, I know what (roughly) 130 / 140 / 150 feels like to me if that makes sense. I usually try to do my SS work around 135 to 140 or so (my HR max is pretty high - around 190ish so that's a comfortable HR for me).

Gbarry, very strong 7500m, low rate. You have some grunt, dont you!

Gordon, bootstrapping the 5k PB. That's how it works, Brother.

Mike, solid execution, speed and stamina after two weeks of Pete. When you said weights and L4 you weren't kidding around! Big leap forward from fall 15.

After a difficult Day 3 following tough intervals on Day 2 this was good. Like @Joseph found the pacing a little difficult but was strong towards the end. Disappointed not to make 2:10.0 split but this is week 1 after all! Todays split time if I had done another 410m would have given me a PB for 5000m.

Hope you all have a great weekend.
Nice work Gordon. It's a tough first week. Very solid efforts this week!

PP Beginners Day 5 - Optional 10min X 2 row with 2 min break

1st 10 min - 2293m - 2:10.8 split @ 26s/m

2 min rest

2nd 10 min - 2319m - 2:09.3 split @ 27s/m

Combined - 4612m - 2:10.0 split @ 26s/m

Today was a great example of what happens when I don't do proper prep (eating and hydration) for me. I didn't eat breakfast and had half a sandwich 2 hours before my rowing. I went to lunch and had some fish, shrimp and asparagus. I went to my club and felt kind of weak. If I had done my normal prep I wonder what my times could have been? Oh well, tis life! Overall, I am very happy with my sub-2:10 split on my 2nd 10 mins. Looking forward to a couple of days rest to recover.

Have a very happy holiday weekend to those in the US!

Cheers!

Week 1 day 2 workout. I was shooting for 2:15 average at a a lower spm, it happened to come out to 23. I'm trying to learn pacing on the fly and it's going ok (I guess.) At some point in the last 1000 I decided to have a go at my all time PB (22:15, didn't make it) and that resulted in my legs giving out. It wasn't a big deal since I have the next couple of days off. I'm going to skip ahead to the second week with the rest of the new guys next week.

Jack, I tried strapless for the first time today and it's going to take a little getting used to. I can see how it's going to improve my technique a good bit in the future, I could actually tell better when I made a good stroke. Cool down and warm up only for awhile but eventually I'll try as a SS. Oh well off to have some dinner and maybe a beer or two.

:/ Glenn tough times to hit.

Should of done my hard distance piece yesterday, but spent most of the day driving. Interestingly like Mike, my core stability has increased, so no back ache from the driving yesterday and my osteopath has noticed a marked improvement in my posture.

So after a missed day I did another rate restricted 5k (was thinking of doing 6k but decided against it as I sat down), trying to hit 9w/stroke forgot my phone so no photos, managed 19:55 @22.4 so just over 9w/stroke. But rate was higher than I wanted. While rowing I thought about what was causing me to struggle to rate low. I think it's in the recovery, I return my hands quickly over my knees, but then instead of swinging forward I swing forward and bend my knees. Of course the reverse is happening when I pull but that won't affect rating low just my effectiveness. Now I am aware of it I will work on it but I don't think it will be quick or easy...

It's worthwhile doing strapless as warmup and/or cooldown for brief periods or spending time doing it as a drill before you try to switch over. It takes some getting used to and demands a fair amount of focus at first.

Thanks Greg and Pie. Felt good the first 250 of the last but the great week got me at the mid point. Mind and legs said no more. Rate wasn't going to bail me out of that one!

Glenn - great stuff on the first three as Greg said - though as I was hoping to go under 1:47 for all 4 and read your post just before I left for the gym it did increase my nervousness somewhat!

PP Cycle 1, Week 3, Day 1 - 4x1000 - 1:46.8 average (with more PM shenanigans)

I've been rowing at a different gym on Saturdays to the rest of the week - it has 4 Model Es with PM5s - that was where I had the issue with rest times last week, and despite being on a different erg today had essentially the same situation arise. Got through my first interval at a 1:46.9 pace, took a few deep breaths, looked up at the PM and it said I only had about 40 seconds of rest left!

No panic on the phone stop watch today - I assumed it had been counting down from 1:00, so started the stopwatch when the PM got to zero, and went off as close to 4:00 on the stopwatch as I could. Turns out from looking at the memory it had been counting down from 0:44 - so ended up with a slightly shorter rest between intervals 1 and 2, and then gave a few seconds of that back in the following rests when I had some issues with pop-up ads when I was trying to start the stopwatch and had to do more guesswork!

I guess one upside is I get to see the splits of intervals 2-4 - with the 4 intervals shown in order here (where you can also see the 0:44 rest period):

Image

So I got all 4 under 1:47 as I'd hoped - very happy with that, and also that I didn't leave much in the tank here - the last one and recovery from sucked pretty hard. SPM dropped to 28 for the last 200m of the fourth - was doing anything I could to get across the line at that stage and actually threw in a few hard but slower pulls at about 1:44 just to make sure I'd hit my target.

And here's the HR chart where I did my best estimate of actual rest time (in seconds) - interestingly I only got up to 188 in the 4th interval.

Image

I did some experimentation on the PM afterwards, and it seems rest periods up to 4:15 are fine, but beyond that things go wrong (hence the rest after the 750 being the first with an issue last week), I took some more photos of the PM info and will post in the product forum to see if I can get any help with that I can pass onto the gym.

Rohan, I hear the new standard in the computer industry is maturity and stability. The PM5 has been around for just a few days shy of two yrs. so should be dry behind the chip and the early problems appear to have stabilized (still there) but the interval rest "limitation" is news to me. May be news to Concept 2 also. You could check the firmware version next time you're in. Gym management may not realize that the PM5 is not exactly a turnkey proposition so a possible source of the glitchiegoomys there. Douglas Adams would have admired your unflappable cool and improvisation.

Rohan, great session and way to stick with it. Finishing is such a better and rewarding experience than not! I shouldn't have tested my PB on this session and didn't plan on it, but then I was almost there without the fortitude to bring it home! You've done the plan very nicely so far and it's been fun to share splits. Just a couple of workouts to go before we start again on cycle #2!
