Dog Days of Summer & Rowlympics 2016

Taking part in one of Concept2's individual challenges? This is the place to talk about it.

Dog Days of Summer & Rowlympics 2016

Post by cemlynjones » July 29th, 2016, 5:39 am

Hi, grateful for some clarification on how the different time zones around the world are handled for these 2 challenges. Each rower will log to their own logbook. Does the logbook software take care of which time zone each rower is in or are the Challenges set in one specific time zone and each rower has to manage their own rows accordingly ??

Thanks

Cemlyn

Everything runs in EST (during Winter) or EDT (during Summer) as that's the zone where Concept2 USA are located.

Dougie, I don't think that's entirely correct. For me (at least) the C2 Utility uploads workouts to the logbook using local time, and the logbook displays them back to me with the same times. I haven't seen anywhere to enter a time zone, so I assume C2 are not actually recording US Eastern timestamps, just the user-entered timestamp - wherever they happen to be. I assume they have a timestamp of when the actual logbook entry happened, but that could be many days different to when the piece was done.

That may be different for workouts entered online, haven't done one of those so can't compare. There's no timezone (or time, even) field on the input panel though.

What's still unclear to me is whether the Olympics challenge is any workout *on* the 5th to 22nd inclusive (I assume it is), or if there's any implied "after" or "before" clauses operating. No mention of "times have to be entered by xx date", either. It wouldn't hurt C2 to invest in an extra sentence or two to make things a little clearer for those of us who don't live in Vermont ...

Concept2 don't have anything explicit on http://log.concept2.com/challenges/dog-days so you should always assume times are local for them. That's always been the case in the past.

The Utility uses your local PC clock as the time base which is why it can use times that are local to you. It also assumes you've set the monitor's clock to your local time.

?? How does the PC clock get in on the act? The log card will have whatever time and date that is set on the monitor - which can be just about anything from before the invention of the erg to far in the future. I don't understand how the PC can be involved unless you are talking about a PC connected directly to the monitor which is not exactly a common practice for the vast majority of erg users.

The point I'm trying to get across is that everything is local time.

The monitor runs on local time (assuming the clock has been set correctly)
The utility runs on local time (assuming it's using a time server to keep the clock accurate and the locale is set correctly).

The C2 log.concept2.com website assumes all times are local (it runs on Eastern Standard or Eastern Day time) as it has no profile option to define a time zone.

From my own point of view it is a non-issue. It is significant for those who enter time period challenges that have specific starting and ending times. For those challenges, it was my impression that C2 time, i.e. EST/EDT, was the base.

It is not necessary that my time units (days, hours) should be coextensive with yours or C2's. We are not meeting up to erg together. We're all erging on our respective day, date, and hour and only nominally AT the same time. GMT +/- is relational. All other time has nominal equivalence which is just dandy because it involves so little fuss and muss on the part of any party.

I thought that C2 gave a period of grace for folk to upload their metres for a specific challenge. Am I wrong?

For the uploading yes, but not for the time at which the last piece for the period is completed, i.e. the monitor "time stamp." As I remember, there were a few days of grace for entering the results. I don't remember how many - a week???

Curious... at the end of the first day of the Rowlympics 2 people have gold medals; having rowed 25+ hours. In my time zone there are only 24 hrs in a day :D

For what it's worth, my logbook now says "You have completed 2:10:00 in the Rowlympics challenge." That's 2 sessions, both 5 x 10min, 3 min rest. They're counting rest time!
The second session was immediately after the opening ceremony, the first was 24 hours before. So done on on the 5th & 6th for me, but the 4th & 5th Vermont time.

Ergo: To answer the original question, whatever date is set in the PM is what counts. If it's 1970-01-01 then you'll miss out.

Thanks George....yes I knew the 15 hrs but the 'medalists' had posted times of 25 and 30 hrs at the time of the opening ceremonies. Just thought it was kind of funny. cheers

Ah - I didn't see that measurement the first time I looked. Seems kinda odd, I agree. Did you notice the 25 hr person has 55,592 lifetime metres and 5,057 season metres? 5,057m seems rather low for 25:05 hours of rowing (I think that's close to 30 mins per 500m! Suspect a data entry error, maybe - no way to see if any of this is entered as "verified". If you transpose the hours to minutes, and minutes to seconds - 5,057 in 25m05s is 2:28 pace, seems rather more believable. Guess this just brings up the age old question again, doesn't it ...

Edit: And who is the Norwegian that appears in the medals by country, but is missing from the overall tables? Guess there's still some programming bugs to be worked out.
