Not every city maintains a Buffalo Herd Nature Preserve...

Twenty miles west of Denver, right off Interstate 70, there's a buffalo herd that draws a lot of visitors to the exit next to it. The backdrop of the often snow capped peaks throws you back to another time. The section of I-70 that parallels this magnificence is currently one of the areas where there are not alternate roads for cyclists to travel...they have to ride on the interstate shoulder. Yep, I've done it on a Bike To Work Day back when I lived in Evergreen. Bike Jeffco began lobbying for a path from Genesee to El Rancho (Evergreen exit) to take cyclists off the highway ten years ago. This path was finally funded, and in recent weeks, we've watched the path get set, some of it paved, bike/ped bridges get installed next to the buffalo herd...it is going to be WONDERFUL when it opens in the next week or so. Yeah, I know. Local excitement...but I spend a TON of time on Bike Jeffco stuff, and this is exciting!

Nailed my 1st 14er this morning, Mt Bierstadt 14065 ft. Part of my training for half dome in yosemite in 1 month. erg meters are suffering this last 6 weeks as I have been doing quite a bit of incline training. Kind of sad though, that it is my 1st 14er and I have lived in Colorado all my life. But I guess it's never too late to start. I will be back to full erg training in early Sept. Happy rowing to all.

Oh Mighty Thor, ya had to go there. These chicken legs of mine are a bit sore today, I'll get on the rower tomorrow.
K2 the buffalo heard is always one of the things I look for on my trips up to the mountains, They are awesome along with the mountain goats up around Georgetown, which yesterday there were about 5 of them grazing right along the highway. There is always fun little distractions on the way to the mountains but thats probably why there is always so many accidents

It's really true...deer and antelope both seen during mountain bike ride on Saturday, and you don't even have to leave the comfort of your vehicle to see the buffalo and mountain goats...wait...that's a whole nother song...

Hooboy...the bucket lists and the milestones are just waiting for our actions! Tick tock tick tock....don't let them slip by! This is a life of no regrets.

He did it! he done it! just like dat! One of us Mike's had to do it.
A little update on my rowing plan. I was doing the 180 minus age minus 10 HR plan. This means 180-15-10 is the lowered end of the band at 119. My range would be from 119 to 129. I found it too slow. I was losing muscle mass and although my pace was improving I didn't find it was doing enough good.
I am now doing the same 180 minus age and add 10 for the top end of the range. This is 180-51 = 129 plus 10 is 139. That's now my HR range from 129 to 139. I still move up with a long WU and then go for 60 minutes in the band. Does that make me a boy in the band? Then another long CD at the end. I am liking this so far. I feel like I worked and we'll see if it tires me later in the day or not. So far so good though.

Ha! I guess I was busier than even I knew...and just like that - a couple of days of posting were left in the atomic dust!

The Peak to Plains trail, part one, opened on Thursday. A few years ago I listened to a presentation at the Colorado Mountaineering Center about this idea...and I can truthfully admit that I thought it would never ever happen. It's a pricey thing to carve a trail out of the mountainsides - no matter how much rich history is there. And yet, creating a multiuse trail is just the kind of thing that brings history and accessibility to many more people - and shares the wonder with everyone. I have not yet gone to the trailhead - but I surely intend to do so before the week is fully out. It is awesome. I listened to County Commissioners arguing over the price of creating stepouts on the pedestrian bridge, and know that their value is well worth the $20K per side. Watch the short teaser presentation put together by the combined open space groups of Jefferson and Clear Creek counties.

Similarly, I was given the opportunity yesterday to "inspect" the buffalo herd trail as part of a group of riders that the Colorado Department of Transportation allowed on the unfinished trail. It is 75 percent complete, yet there are quite a few sections where the concrete trail has unpaved sections with big dropoffs. Estimated time to completion is end of August. BUT...the really cool thing was discovering on this ride that Denver Mountain Parks has created a hidden gem. They have established a viewing/picnic area that allows visitors to walk down the path (it is another multiuse path), or drive to it off a secondary road, to an area where they can comfortably watch the bison. This gives some wheelchair access as well. It's part of Lariat Loop...





Nothing like riding through the forest...


Okay - enough about biking trails...but they are so COOL ! In my time as a nomad, I have come to believe that there are hidden gems to be found no matter where you live...you just have to get out there and find them!

And, while I was having a laugh looking at some videos, I saw several apparently pushing the idea that buffalo is a favorite prey for bands of Bigfoot. So I guess someone's going to have to organize 'Bigfoot Day' on the Buffalo Trail.
