2016 Dominators Update

Post by Ralph Earle » June 4th, 2016, 5:58 pm

2016 Dominators Update

It’s time once again to update the list of The Dominators: those who have finished the season ranked #1 in at least five of the ten* events in their gender/weight/age group since the rankings began in 2000.

Pride of place goes to Anne Bourlioux (F-H, 50-59) who swept the board and set three world records doing so (500m, 1K, 60min). Anne has earned ten #1s in three of the past four years.

For the second year in a row, Steve Roedde (M-L, 60-69) earned nine #1s. Steve remains the seventh person to capture nine.

Justine Reston (F-L, 40-49) followed up her impressive 2015 debut with eight #1s. She bettered six of the world records she set last year (5K, 6K, 30min, 10K, 60min, HM), and added one at 1K. Justine is the 16th person to earn eight #1s in a season.

Mari Friend (F-L, 70-79) captured seven #1s. Since 2000, 25 people have finished the season with seven #1s.

Next with six #1s was Marjorie Roome (F-H, 60-69). This is the second year she’s done it; she remains the 27th erger to earn six.

The 2016 list finishes with Andrew Jakubowski (M-H, 80-89), Arwed Egger (M-L, 50-59), Margit Haar Hansen (F-H, 40-49), who set four world records (30min, 60min, HM, M), Elizabeth Feldman (F-L, 60-69) and Gillian Burrell (F-L, 80-89), each of whom had the five #1s within a single age/weight group needed to become a Dominator.

Finally, last year’s summary omitted Philip Price (M-L, 80-89), who had five #1s. I apologize for the error.

You're welcome, Lindsay. And thank you for catching the omission of Terry Dargan. In checking my spreadsheet, I see I also omitted Tiina Kapten. The list of Lifetime #1s should finish with:

10 Donald Alden
10 Jostein Vadla
10 Kate Metalli
10 Anibal Sanchez-Salazar
10 Edward Budimier
10 Sam Garber
10 Terry Dargan
10 Tiina Kapten
10 Heather Koerber

I apologize to Mr. Dargan and Ms. Kapten.

Great work.
Really impressive runs there from the individuals
Nice to know someone is taking the time to honour their time and effort put in.
Also gives us ' youngsters ' something to aim for..

Anna Lewis set 14 British Lwt & Hwt records in the last 6 months together with 6 world records ranging through all the distances/times in the 30-39 Hwt/lwt categories. She does not bother ranking her times online but the records get verified. There is a stat for you :D

What happens when someone breaks a world record that is better than the ranking? Do you still give credit to the top ranked person despite them not actually being the quickest?

Most top rows are not ranked. Our nat championships often have lots of pretty good to very good 2k, up to low 5.40 ies, those are never ranked. The last few years 13/1400 participans

The whole system is faulty, individual times c2 can,t help, but if even pretty big races are not ranked

Yes, I do have her WRs in my spreadsheet. One question, though -- is the year wrong or her age wrong for the HM Hwt record:

21097 30-39 Anna Lewis F Lwt 37 GBR 1:22:50.2 2016 PM Verification Code
21097 30-39 Anna Lewis F Hwt 35 GBR 1:23:18.4 2016 Witnessed at public club

C2 does rank race results if they receive them from the race organizers.

This is why the majority of the people on the list are in the "advanced" age categories (i.e. 60+). Young (top) rowers are usually not ranking their pieces (very few do) and are not testing 10 different distances every year - they may test as little as 2 distances (2k/6k).
PBs: 2k 6:09.0 (2020), 6k 19:38.9 (2020), 10k 33:55.5 (2019), 60' 17,014m (2018), HM 1:13:27.5 (2019)

Old PBs: LP 1:09.9 (~2010), 100m 16.1 (~2010), 500m 1:26.7 (~2010), 1k 3:07.0 (~2010)

True, otw rowers care about otw, the erg is just a tool. I sometimes see training pieces coming along which do impress a lot.

This is not an official thing though - just Ralph spending a fair bit of time crunching data of interest and good on him.
Surely no biggies if people don't choose to rank or the like - just a bit of fun (and if they want to they always can)

Absolutely - I'm not trying to take away anything from the hard work that Ralph put into this.
