Well, I did it, a slow 5k!

It feels great just to do it, the mental benefits far outweigh any physical pain I will have to put up with tonight.

Jim

Excellent photograph Mark. Believe or not I do miss that type of weather, on occasion. I also missed the rain of the pacific Northwest while I was in Arizona, and now I miss the heat of Arizona! Grass is always greener. Welcome to all the new members, great to have you.

Nov. 7 6K
Nov. 8 21.6K (it just killed me).

Good Rowing all,

Darren

Time, camera/lens, exposure, post-capture manipulation? Do you mind if I use it as wallpaper?

I used to be in a part of the world that would have occasional mornings that felt like that, but not now...

Thanks!

Alissa

Thanks for the compliment Alissa. Actually, this picture was taken last winter, February I believe. It was one of those near-magical winter prairie mornings. Very dense fog. Very cold but not a breath of wind, so bearable. I strapped on the snowshoes and hiked across the field with my camera and my border collie. There was absolutely no horizon in any direction - the snow on the ground blended perfectly with the foggy sky; so much so that I found myself losing my balance a couple of times. Visibility was about 100 feet and it was absolutely silent in the middle of the field. A very surreal, and incredibly "cool" experience!

I can't remember all the photographic details but:

it was late morning
using a Nikon FM2
with a 80-200 AFS zoom
Velvia 50
on a tripod but unsure of exposure or aperture
no manipulation

And yes, feel free to use it as your wallpaper.

Did you do anything special to facilitate the healing?
Jim

It was probably a couple of weeks or so from the time of my most recent injury until I was back on the erg again, Jim.

I tried chiropractic treatment first with no relief at all. I've strained my back maybe 5 or 6 times over the last 6 years or so; chiropractic care was quite helpful the first couple of times but seems to be less and less beneficial as time goes on for some reason.

Then I tried about $75 worth of painkillers and muscle relaxants. This brought short-term relief but didn't solve the problem at all - I was able to sit on the seat of the erg but unable to reach the handle.

Then my brother-in-law showed me The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook. This is basically a self help guide to pain relief of all kinds through self massage; and it has worked wonders for me and my back. Check the positive book reviews as well.

I can provide more details if you wish, but by massaging trigger points in my hips, buttocks and finally hamstrings I went from being nearly completely immobile to being able to touch my toes, and completely pain-free, within about 36 hours. All without the aid of a single beer!

If you are going to buy the book you should order a Thera cane at the same time. Self massage is tiring work for the fingers and forearms and it is difficult to reach all of them without some sort of aid; the cane helps immensely in this regard. FYI, I had good mail order service here.

I just wish there was a similar cure for a cold.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Good rowin', hosers. We are within 100k of Winnipeg, eh!

We went sailing through Portage La Prairie.

I forgot to "zero" my placement errors over the last few stops. Calgary Rob's row for Nov 9, 2005 is shorter on the map than it was in real life. (Your's was the row just before the correction, sorry about that). Our markers should be back within 100 meters of the rows now.

Thanx for all of the advice on LBP, I think I may order the trigger point books.

Jim

Mark, do you use the trigger point therapy only with injuries or is it used also to prevent injuries (i.e. regular use when healthy?)

Hi Everyone,

10 km for me last night (Nov.9) on the Wolverine Level 2: warm up 500 m, 3.5 k at 2:33, r750, 2.5 k at 2:33, r 750, 2K at 2:33, cool down 500 m. Even afer only a few days of rowing, I can definately feel an improvement in overall strength. I hope all you guys (it is only the men in the group, eh ) (j/k) feel better, get healed, etc. and that you will be back to rowing soon. Jim seems to be improving, I only had to bring him his coffee, laptop and books this morning. He was able to lean over and reach the drugs unassisted!

Cheers,

Linda
