QUOTE(Yukon John @ Oct 31 2005, 03:42 PM)

Do you want us to guess and e-mail directly to you Mark, or can we influence the guesses of others by posting here? I'm going to take a chance that it's here . With all of the factory farming (do I have the term right?) I'd say (D).

I think it's best to post your answer right here and you are indeed correct with the answer (D); actually we represent less than 2% of the population. The main reason, IMO, is the continued mechanization of agriculture.

I work with my uncle on our farm, he is 82 years old. He has seen a number of changes over the years and has adapted well IMO. For example, where there was once a two-horse team working the land with a 6' plow, we now have 500 HP tractors pulling 65' seeders. GPS equipment is becoming commonplace as well as automatic steering systems with 2" accuracy. Where my uncle and my father used to load 120 lb bags of wheat into boxcars by hand, piling them 8' high, we now have 13" diamter grain augers capable of unloading a semi-trailer in less than ten minutes.

I have "only" been farming about 15 years now and even over that timeframe there have been significant changes. The most dramatic, IMO, has been the continued mechanization of agriculture. Our workforce is half of what it was just ten years ago; yet our total output has doubled by farming more acres and growing more grain per acre. In other words, our productivity per employee has quadrupled in ten years - a fact that I am quite proud of.

Enough babbling, time for a row!

Well, I am officially still a child trapped in an adult's body. Saturday night I was running around with my 8 year old niece on my shoulder. She loved it so I decided to do the same with my other niece... who is 20...

Half way across the street her attempts to jerk me into putting her down were successful, I lost my balance and we "hit the road", literally. As we made our approach, the only thing I was thinking was how she might lose her balance and hit her head, so out goes the arm to stop all 340 lbs of us... Now the newest addition to the family is a fracture to one of the bones in my forearm.

The pain isn't as bad as the number of tylenol 3's they prescribed would dictate, and I'm hoping that a few weeks will allow me to use the erg for nursing it back to life. Until then I'll keep reading your posts and shed a few tears for my broken trip across Canada. Maybe by the time you get to my province (Ontario), I will be able to get back to my regular meagre contributions...

Sorry to hear about your broken bones, Rickman. It can be sore.
From your description I am guessing it is just above the wrist?
Are you in a cast?

Carol Kittridge may be joining our team, when she can find her way into the forums.

Keep on rowin', I will do some kliks once I get the kids delivered to the Spookarama dance.

Jim

Tough luck there Rick, I hope you heal up soon. You may want to check with Xeno or some of the other remote coaches to see if there is any one-handed exercises you can do on the erg; they may advise against it too, I don't know.

Today:
1K warmup @ 2:30
8K @ 2:09.1, 23 SPM
1K cool down

This is a picture of foxtail barley that I took last summer. It is a common weed across most of Sask and Manitoba, growing mainly in low lying, saline areas where there is little crop competition; very beautiful in mid to late summer.

Bummer Rick!!! Maybe you can do some kind of cross-training? I Broke my neck many years ago but a trainer at the university I was at had me ride a bike daily to keep some kind of conditioning. More importantly, it helped keep my spirits up. It's amazing when you exercise regularly and then it is taken away! If you're thinking of cross-training and get stuck for ideas, let us know. As a team, I'm sure we could find some fun ways for you to get your endorphins . John.

13 k total, with 4X1000@1:50pace. I'm still feeling the effects of the 1/2 marathon on Sunday. The last thousand was brutal .
