Hey fellas,
So if youve seen my past posts you would have noticed that I have mentioned my back injury/soreness which eventually prevented me from rowing. I do see a physio but if any of you guys out there studied the anatomy of the human body like i do know many good rowers have done I would like to hear some input from u guys.
BACKGROUND INFO:
Pain started off uncomfortable about a year agp (i used to gym, not many deadlifts per say but a bit of erging as well) and then rowing season came in and it was still uncomfortable meaning it just needed to twist my back and sttretch it out, there was no pain. So, as you may know we have a preseason then summer holiday break which is 8 weeks and then race season. It wasn't all the way up until about the 4th week of race season and 3 weeks out from head of the river that my back was just absolutely fucking killing me. anyways, i rowed through it, rowing season ended and slowly slowly it went back to moderate pain but it has never reached its previous level before rowing season. So, it is bearable, but jsut really uncomfortable and i always got twist my back and move my legs to try and stretch it (usually hearing a few clicks/pops relieves it).
--------------------------------------------
The first test my physio did was lying down with my hands underneath my lower back and lift the leg up, almost immediately at like a 20degree angle i felt the weight of back onto my hands and it was concluded that this was a result of weak hip flexors or weak something to do with hips. And in rowing especially with a lot of bending from the hips this meant my lower back was taking a lot of force because my hips couldnt rotate that far.
-------------------------------------------
The pain is in the side of my backs, sometimes it varies from left to right, but there is always some sort of slight pain in either side.
I now do some hip strengthening exercises and doing stuff like rolling out my bum with a tennis ball. I've also tried doing psoas stretches.
Now, what my question is: do you think I should stop exercising completely (im not doing gym - just cycling, swimming and running) whilst i stretch and also what are some stretches based on the information ive given.
Thanks!

I know the health system in some countries can be expensive or not very good, but it seems that you haven't yet consulted a physician, had a scan, xray or mri. So you don't really know what going on..
It seems to me without knowing what is causing the pain, any advice could be potentially damaging to your condition.
My advice would be to get it checked out and find the cause.
In the meantime, try not to do exercise that the injury.
Pain is usually the bodies way of trekking you that there is something wrong.
Keep well

if it helps i got an MRI and apparently theres an "Annular disk bulge" in the "L5/S1". My physio says that the pain pinpointed is not to do with that region and that its a common bulge etc etc also many symptoms such as nerve pains down legs are not present so that also rules that outbisqeet wrote:I know the health system in some countries can be expensive or not very good, but it seems that you haven't yet consulted a physician, had a scan, xray or mri. "Doctor, it hurts when I do that!"
"Then don't do that"

a bulge is a commen injury - lots of people have them without realising - can be painfree. doesnt have to be tho.mattflint49 wrote:if it helps i got an MRI and apparently theres an "Annular disk bulge" in the "L5/S1". I
i have a couple of cracked discs / slipped. from l4/l5 - l5/s1 -so in the same region.
in fact i have a 30% disability for that injury, which was at one point - "very painful".
my physia reccomended - dancing to build up the core muscles - this was what was lacking (in my case).
I was actually a bit suprised as uptil that point I was mostly cycling, but was a very active decathlete and have always been a gym rat.
Well I started danceing - much to the pleasure of my wife (still do - ballroom and latin, mostly salsa 2xweek).
back pain was releived and i was able to train more.
bought a c2 last year in July - coming upto 4 million meters this month. havent looked back since.
my reccomendation would be to lay off the painfull stuff.
get your injury sorted out and restart.
trainng hard on agrevated injury will do no-one any good.

Matt, I'm confused. I thought you said it was your QL muscles that you were treating and that your doctor or phiscal therapist was not allowing you to erg? Why aren't you following that program anymore? Are you healed?

On this tread http://www.c2forum.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... 29#p348833 he was told by multiple people that he does not have the physique to be a successful rower.
Now, his own body is trying to tell him rowing is not a sport for him.
What's next for this promising young man? A Darwin Award?
