Hi all,

Just curious about other's experience when the little bundle of joy comes home. How soon before others have gotten back to the machine, things like that.

A very happy (if tired) Father

Been a while since I had the newborn baby challenge...so I can't add much on that score....but I am curious...does your name come from the film Cool Hand Luke?

Unless the erg is in the nursery, I'd keep to a schedule of working out. You'll actually gain energy from this, and you'll sleep better. Back off the intensity if you need to. If you're not getting enough rest, just do what you can.

For the first baby, I helped with everything. I had the night shifts of every 2 hours. Taylor had jaundice, so we were up quite a bit. That really sucked.

For the second baby, I caught a break. Jackson was pretty easy.

For the third baby, we were in a new house, and the exercise room was in the basement. I was pretty much a slug during this time, however.

For the fourth baby coming in December, I'll keep to my schedule of workouts after the kids go to sleep. This means 9PM workouts.

I hope this helps...

Congratulations.

I think you want to make sure that your partner gets a break first, but generally I think you both need to take care of yourselves too. It can really depend on the child, but newborns sleep a lot, and actually may not require that much "active" supervision. So getting a short workout in while they nap is certainly possible for example. I can't remember rowing much when we had infants, but I think that was more because we kept moving my rowing machine and remodeling the room it was in. So that took time and messed up any rowing.

I am not sure how Bill rows at night with infants, because that generally seems to be the neediest and most demanding time, and your partner may also be exhausted, so that was when I did primary child care for both children. Mornings are also really hard to plan for. Middle of the day in a 2 hour nap may be the best opportunity.

Now that my kids are 4 and 6, I row at night after they go to bed, like Bill. Tonight, after going up for the 3rd time and "reminding" them that it was getting to be 9pm and they really had to be quiet and fall asleep because I was going to row, my son said, "yeah, I love it when Daddy rows," and as I walked down the hall I could hear him imitating the whoosh whoosh whoosh sound of the C2.

Granted it was slow and short, but after so many months off, I missed it

Apart from that, erging shouldn't be affected too much with the arrival of a newborn. When I get home from work my first duty is to give the kids a bath while my wife cooks their dinner. After that I'm allowed free time to do an erg workout.

However once the newborn becomes a toddler and gets mobile watch out. Make sure your erg is kept from their hands. Otherwise, like in my case, when it's time to do a workout you may find cables unplugged, batteries removed, damper settings changed, the monitor tampered with and greasy little finger prints all over it.

Unless your erg can be locked away from your kids I strongly suggest to purchase a C2 erg cover. Not only does it keep the dust and weather off your erg but more importantly the kids.

Roland Baltutis

Fiftyeggs,

I have a 7 month old little girl and can sympathize. Time really does become precious. My husband works away from home a lot, in the oilfield, so I am pretty much on my own most of the time. But I still do my best to fit working out into the schedule. Even before I got my own erg last month, I used to pack my baby girl up and take her to the gym with me. Sometimes she would sleep beside me in the car seat and let me row, sometimes not... Now that I have a rowing machine at home, I try to work out during her naps. I have a big blanket for her on the floor in the rowing room and a baby swing. The wooshing sound seems to be soothing to her, so long as I don't do a lot of starts and stops like intervals.

Congratulations on the addition to your family, and good luck!

One thing I'd add is to concentrate on training rows most of the time. Accepting that any session could be interrupted, and remembering that rowing isn't as important as your little bundle of joy (and sick and poo!), will help you not get stressed if a workout is interrupted, but that's much harder if you're about to set a new PB! Save the record rows for times when your partner knows what you are doing and is feeling energetic enough to care for the kid.

Oh, and congratulations!

Cheers, Paul

Krysta-

Great photo, great set-up, and adorable girl.

Be sure to be alert and careful once she gets more mobile during your workouts.

When I started erging my kids were 4 and 7. I remember they would come into the room while I was doing a hard piece or interval and would start talking to me and asking me questions. I'd have to pant out "CAN'T.....TALK....NOW."

They also attended my first erg race and had a colorful 'Go Dad!' sign and cheered hard. Right after I finished, I heard one of them ask my wife, "Why does he look like that?"

Enjoy the journey.

Neil

Krysta confirmed my notion that the "wooosh" might have a soothing effect. It is said that the sound of a vacuum cleaner will calm some fretting babies, and an erg sounds like a cyclical vacuum I suppose. Just make a recording ("endless loop cassette tape") of your next workout and play that when you are done.

Our 1 yr old twin boys have slept all night (6pm to 7am) since they were 2 months old. We are very lucky, I know.....but they have interrupted many of our former lifestyle activities....won't be any more babies for a while.

CHL:"What we have here is....failure to communicate". great line.
