Million metre row in 90 days
Million metre row in 90 days
I am new to this forum but wanted to see if anyone had tried this challenge.
I tried this a few years back but the challenge then was to complete in a year. I had a nasty back injury which stopped me from completing when on 742,000. A few years later i mentioned this to a friend and he suggested the recommended time span for any challenge is 90 days. After this interest dies off.
It has been a serious effort but after 48 days i have rowed 560,161 - so less than 440,000 to go in 33 days. Need to average more per day in the final stretch but i have factored in at least 1 day off per week and am confident i will succeed.
Has anyone else done a challenge like this?
I have lost 17lbs since the start which was part of the plan aswell as getting through the bleak English winter. I have been writing a blog on this challenge which has helped maintain focus.
When this is complete, i am looking for a new challenge but maybe not as intense. Any suggestions?

Re: Million metre row in 90 days
No the best I did was a couple of monthly challenges and 625Km was my PB for a month.
Currently averaging 6544m a day for the whole season that finishes on 1st May 2016.
Personally I would look at a longer term goal that just keeps you rowing year after year. The challenges are good for one off's but you need more than that longer term. RowPro is great and as your in the UK like many other rowers, the 1930 GMT row for 30 minutes is usually full, all 16 lanes.

Obviously you have had some great weight loss, now you just need to cut back the meters so its sustainable for 6 days a week all year.
Set yourself an annual distance target and average pace for the meters rowed, its great motivation.
The target here is to make the 7500m+ a day group next year, had that as a goal the last couple of years but not made it yet.

Re: Million metre row in 90 days
Oh yeah its possible, there is some people during the team challenges who do well over 1 000 000 in a month. I am not one of those people though, lol.
Why dont you sign up for the world erg challenge and see how much you can build up in a month?

Re: Million metre row in 90 days
I have RowPro and have tried to join sessions in the past but nothing seems to happen at the time of the event. I must look into that further at the end of March when this personal challenge finishes. Since i started on 30th December i am averaging 7737m although i wouldn't be able to sustain that for the year as currently rowing 6 days a week. I have increased from 13500 at the start to last nights 14300 for a one hour row.
I had thought about going for 2.5mill for the season as a longer term goal and the 7500+ isn't far from that. I only started the million in 90 days as a way of getting through the winter months but have got a real buzz and sense of achievement.
I will sign up for the world erg challenge, i had set up my own team but have no one to invite to join so will look at joining another team for this challenge. Any suggestions for a 50 year old?

Re: Million metre row in 90 days
I've never done this as part of a challenge, but if I go and look back at my last 90 days of training, I'm over 1 million meters for that time-span.
I put in anywhere from 300-450k a month, mostly SS with 1 AT and 1 VO2max session added in per week. Total of about 6-8 workouts per week.

Huge distances are possible, but its all relative to your pace.danielcccook wrote:Oh yeah its possible, there is some people during the team challenges who do well over 1 000 000 in a month. I am not one of those people though, lol.

Someone tells you they ran a marathon and your instantly impressed, however if you then found out they took 8 hours to "Run" it your no longer even interested.
As you approach 3.00 pace on the erg you basically doing nothing, half your energy would be going on just moving up and down the slide. Your unique ability becomes not having a life and being able to sit on the Erg all day.
If you already have RowPro I suggest you look at the scheduled rows that have been set-up. Like I said the 1930 GMT is now pretty full all week. Pam sets up most of them but now I'm setting up two more at this time so you can row up to 6 days a week at this time. Pace is all over the place from faster than 1:52 to 2:30 something.

Re: Million metre row in 90 days
Congratulations from me also.
I think your maths is off. If you've done 48 days and 560k, then you have 440k to do in 42 days (not 33 days). If you take a day off a week, you still have 36 days. So, I think you're looking at 12k a day, or around an hour a day of steady state rowing, which is not so bad. Another way of looking at it is putting a solid 40k away over a couple of days will mean you have done two-thirds of the challenge already.
For inspiration, Royal Navy Master at Arms Dave Harris did 626k in a single stretch:
http://www.navy-net.co.uk/community/thr ... ord.31319/
As others have said though, there is a lot to be said for consistency. Personally I try to put in a minimum 100k a month, which is a target I find I can stick with.
Good luck with the rest of your challenge.

Re: Million metre row in 90 days
I also agree that shorter term goals (the monthly C2 challenges, daily meters average and rowing days per week goals) are very useful to promote keeping one's hand in. I have done an average of 3MM meters per annum for two yrs. running but I don't panic if the rate of accumulation isn't absolutely consistent over the year. I observe about myself and my habits that two weeks with no erging and looking forward to a third consecutive week sans erg would worry me. Biggest meter munch I've done was .75MM in a month challenge. I refuse to prescribe a lower limit of effective pace for anyone but myself. Folks of all ages and physical condition can use the erg. Simple fact is we do not all have the same performance abilities, realized or potential. Adaptive rowers use an adjusted meter total for this very reason. If you elevate your heart rate and respiration rate by urging, you're doing useful work.

The amazing Darlene B has done well over 2million meters in a month several times in recent years.

I will be amazed, but only when Concept 2 get the verified column up and working, until then anyone can manually enter whatever meters they like.lindsayh wrote:

Re: Million metre row in 90 days
Brennan's husband Ken stated in this forum that C2 requires verification for top indy challenge totals. Brennan herself stated that erging provides her with relief from fibromyalgia. A life is what you make it. The ingredients aren't always what we would choose if we had the choice. Darlene has shown remarkable persistance in the making of lemonade

Apparently the Concept 2 staff was convinced, since they made a point of publishing an article about her online.Carl Watts wrote:I will be amazed, but only when Concept 2 get the verified column up and working, until then anyone can manually enter whatever meters they like.lindsayh wrote:
