You are knocking on the door of 80', Dean! Don't be bashful about posting your PB's! At your level, each one of them is hard earned.
PB'd myself today. Raced the 1k at CT Indoors and pulled 3:03.9 (1.7 second beat). Longer description of the race in the Pete Plan thread. - Chris

Great PBs Dean and Chris; harvesting dividends from consistent work. Each PB posted here is the result of plenty (and sometimes painful) hours on the erg and a motivator to try to mirror that.christopherregisryan wrote:You are knocking on the door of 80', Dean! I had posted it on the comp. subforum, but there was no response, so I figured that it was less likely to go unnoticed here. Checking out the season rankings, there were only 2 verified longer distances and both them were by guys in their 20s.

Congrats everyone on the PBs, and even some WRs! Really impressive. Can't wait to see what other accomplishments 2016 has in store for us all!

Dean, you are going to run some shorter pieces soon and blow your PBs on those out of the water! The mileage you are putting in monsterous.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
A 10spm rate-capped WR!
Normally, posts about WRs would go into the competition, but in a case in which there is only one entry, it can’t really qualify as a competition. Since this is about a couple of events that I have only done once, the PB thread should fit (but not as a brag), odd as it may seem after 2 decades of erging at an advanced age.
This is little story that started last summer. I hope that some members might find it amusing.
Early this season, 2 new item to the list of ranked events, the 100m and the 1 minute. Like the 100km and the 4 minute events, these were not on the WR list. I sort of ignored them at first – not my cup of tea. But by July, I got the bug and finished off the 100m after my usual 5’ pre-physical therapy wakeup/warmup. No prep – just set it for 100m and went at it. I was reasonably satisfied with it and decided to follow it up with the 1’. For that one, I went for hard pulls a low rate. Then, just for the heck of it, I went ahead and ranked them, even though my times/distances are embarrassing to make public. They were done at home on my dynamic model, so I figured that, in the event that the 100m and 1' were added to the WR list, my results would not be under consideration, since the dynamic is not on the list of allowed models for WRs. Then, lo and behold, last Friday I get an e-mail from C2 to the effect that I now have a couple of new WRs. NB: Plaudits are not in order here – these are what I call default awards, in that there are no other entries in my age category for those events and, in any case, they may be considered as an error and be retracted. Certificates are available, if I request them, but somehow it seems a bit improper. Several earlier WRs were also default, but I had worked hard on all of those and felt that I had earned them, leaving targets that I thought would make the next guys have to work to beat them. These two pieces were really just horsing around – especially the 1’ it was capped at 10spm, the lowest that the monitor can record.
For my fellow number addicts, here is the data on them.
1. Monitor data: 100m, 22.1s, 1:50.5/500. 259watts, 63spm.
Derived values: 1.6m/stroke, 4.1watt-minutes/stroke, 182% of 2k power (based on a 9’ 2k).
Comment: For that one, I am convinced that the dynamic was probably easier than it would have been on a grounded D, simply because I was able to rate that high. The 4.1 SPI isn’t really too bad. I usually try to hold it at 5.0 W’/stroke.
2. Monitor data: 176m, 1:00.0, 2:50.5/500m, 71watts, 10spm.
Derived values: 17.6m/stroke, 7.1watt-minutes/stroke, 50% of 2k power - mid UT2 for me.
Comment: As a one time OTW rower, I love that 17.6 dps – almost 60 feet of glide between the puddles - but not all that satisfying on an erg. The 7.1 SPI also nice to see, but at that low a rate, it had better be a lot higher than usual if it was to be a real capped TT.
The next day, I decided to toss in the 4’ as well – just for the heck of it, but didn’t do any more than paddle my way through at rates of 16/11/11/10 at a 43watt ave (3:21.6). That’s about 30% 2k power, so it could probably be called a bottom UT3. That one does not fit into the PB category, since I must have done it at least once in the past and, if so, I am sure that it was done at a a reasonable effort.

Bob,
You deserve a certificate for being an inspiration to all that read this forum! The fact that you are the only rower in your age group reporting times is a testament to your dedication. Thank you.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Well, my hat is doffed to Vincent Home of Australia. He is a year older than me and really gave me a run for my money in the 500m and 1k early last year when I was a new nonagenarian, trying to pick up a batch of records while I was still in the early stage of the age bracket. Not only is he older, but he is blind. Just recently he joined me on the 90+ record list, doing the HM, which I had avoided completely, along with the FM. I figure that the old skeletal frame just couldn't handle them anymore.RBFC wrote:Bob,

I had the experience last January of doing a 2k race in which the lighting was bad and I couldn't read the monitor. I had to rely on my cox completely to keep me informed. But that was for a period less than 9 minutes. I can't really imagine what it would be like to race for an hour and 47+ minutes without being able to see the monitor.
I must say that I was quite surprised that he had done one of the very long distances. Based on last season's results I had pegged him as a power rower, but not having endurance. His completion of a half marathon race puts that idea to rest. Now I am waiting to see if he is going to knock off some of my middle distance events.

Wow Bob! You certainly are an inspiration. Congrats on the records!

Mike thanks- going to see if I can get to 400 hopefully soon
Bob, of course congrats, you continue to inspire with not only your rowing prowess but also your contribution to the discourse- I think you should go back and do a "real" attempt at the 100m and 1min just to set a standard of what can be done past 90

One of two of a kind. Amazing.
There are two types of people in this world: Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data

The 40 and over crowd is all inspirational to me. Bob you take that inspiration to a new level. I'm always more in awe of people that are everyday people that take things to the next level the way you have. It's incredible. To me those are the best stories. People that work harder than everyone else. You're in that class with a rare few Bob! In addition, you take the time out to help newbies like me. That's appreciated more than you imagine. Thanks!
