New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Welcome kerosene to the erging madness.
I can report about ticking off a season goal by going 8.051 meters on the 30min (210 more than last PB). Went with flat pacing between 401-404 meters on 1:30-splits, 414 on the last one. Saw 168BPM, averaged at 158.

Kerosene, certainly respectable starting numbers! Nice rows. I still haven't tackled a 500m yet, just a little unsure of how to approach it pace-wise but I'm going to give it a go soon.
Hardy - very nice piece, fast and far!

Hardy, congrats on the 30:00!
Armando, what is an "HOP" ? Given the meters, I am guessing a break-through 1 hour?

To just PR may not be so hard, but gaining over 500m is impressive.ArmandoChavezUNC wrote:New HOP PR (only second one I've done in my life, so not hard to PR).

Yep, HOP stands for hour of power - so as many meters as you can get in 60:00 minutes.Hillclimber wrote:Armando, what is an "HOP" ? Given the meters, I am guessing a break-through 1 hour?

Thanks Bob. I'm not at all diminishing the feat, I'm quite content with the time, but that other HOP I did (the one in my signature) was after only 1.5 years of rowing, so I definitely expected to be much faster. I'd like to hit 17,000 meters one day, but that's a very tall order.Bob S. wrote:To just PR may not be so hard, but gaining over 500m is impressive.

Armando, nice work. That's a hell of a split to hold on to for an hour, impressive.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Well, I'll take these while they're coming easy. I suppose one of the benefits to being a keen newcomer is that there's lots of room for improvement, which in turn equates to PRs!
Tonight I decided I'd tackle a 5000m so I could log my time for Forum Flyers on the CTC website. I came home from work, did some ring dips and med ball situps and then warmed up for 10 minutes on the bike. Got on the erg and did a very slow 1000m warmup. Set up RowPro, a 20-minute playlist of music, and got to 'er.
Not sure if I was being overzealous or just truly wanting to challenge myself, but I felt like I was capable of quite a bit faster than my 19:22 -didn't feel like I went all out last time, so settled on a game plan of 1:53 average which would land me at 18:50. Crazy, right? I thought so too.
I started off strong, which was my plan, get the first 500 in quick so I can settle more easily into a good pace. This might have been a mistake, not sure, but I know for certain the whole row was painful. Very suck-y.
Managed to keep my splits as close to 1:53 as I could with a few later on drifting up to 1:54 but nothing higher than that for the duration. Was pretty gassed by the end so really had to push myself to the brink to shave off that 4 seconds on the last split.
My SPM is all over the place- no excuses from me this was an ugly row. Sometimes I get angry at the pace boats slipping past me and involuntarily pick up my rate.
AT ANY RATE - I am over the moon with this piece! Very happy with myself. Only problem is now I am terrified of the next time I run a 5k

If you think you are definitely going to die at about the 3k mark, you've paced your 5k just right. If you never want to do another one when you finished it, you've nailed it. 5ks are a nasty, nasty distance.
Well done on your PB! Congratulations.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
You are right about that first 500. With another 18 minutes to go it is wasteful to fly for that first 500m. You certainly did a great job of recovering after sagging in the middle, but it would have been less stressful to have settled in just using your game plan pace, 1:53. The seconds gained by that fast start cost you dearly later on. Congratulations for hanging on and coming out ahead at the end.thecrashton wrote: I started off strong, which was my plan, get the first 500 in quick so I can settle more easily into a good pace. Very nice, based on this you are close to 7 min on the 2k.
Starting fast, although seen often, I sometimes do it myself, is always costing time, better just from the off get on pace, in the end you will double win back what you not overdid at the start.
For the rest the pacing was fine. Wonder how longnit will take to break the 1.50 border on this![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

This is so true! They really are a mental game. Just go out at your target pace and keep calm. And keep the music cranked upgregsmith01748 wrote:If you think you are definitely going to die at about the 3k mark, you've paced your 5k just right. Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Thanks for the feedback guys! Greg, you're right, it is nasty. By 3k I was ready to throw in the towel, and with 1000 left I was just trying to keep my wits about me and get a breath.
Bob I agree, my next attempt at a 5000 will be paced better to start. Probably would have been able to eek out a bit more of a sprint at the end and keep all my splits below 1:54.
Henry - I don't know that I can shave 16 seconds off my 2k like I shaved 30+ off my 5k, but I'm going to try haha. I feel confident I can lean out my splits by a few seconds each, so might be able to hit a hair under 7 on my next go.
1:50 for 5000 might not come for a while because I'm scared to try it again!![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)
