Why Is Rowing The Best Sport?

I love the rhythmic motion of the stroke.

And I love that the erg accommodates such an incredibly wide range of intensity, from slow, easy, just-gotta-put-in-my-hour paddles to explosive, max intensity, I-am-so-pissed-off-at-the-world-right-now-that-I'm-gonna-make-every-muscle-fiber-my-body-scream sprints.

A little burst of erg rage does wonders for the psyche, I've found. And for the thighs.

Sorry folks but Rowing is not the best sport, but it does come very close.

I like Rhythm, Speed thrills, Aerobic oxygen debt, Working every muscle in the body, Fresh air and a Skill factor.

Cross Country Skiing ( Skating technique) gets my vote as number one. Nothing better than being the first one to ski a freshly groomed trail after an overnight dump of powder snow. Working every muscle in the body, skating up a steep hill, trying to get max glide with each skate. Heart working flat out pumping blood to the aching muscles and the lungs screaming for air in the thin cold mountain air. Getting into a skating rhythm where you feel like your dancing.

Then flying down the hill, flat out in a tuck position, using your years of acquired skill to negotiate the turns at speed to avoid trees etc. ....It's magic.

Rowing on water comes next. It also provides an excellent workout for all the major muscle groups including heart and lungs. It also provides the satisfaction of getting into a rhythm and the feeling of moving over water is great.

However, rowing loses out to cross country skiing in the speed and thrills category.

As for indoor rowing, it comes a distant third. You need to seperate indoor and on water rowing in this thread because they do have important differences.

An indoor rower goes nowhere and offers no feeling of movement. Slides help a little but just can't compete with being outdoors with fresh air and changing scenery. No speed thrills either.

An indoor rower is a tool designed for convenience but is still a long way off replicating the real thing. The problem with tools of convenience is that they breed laziness in lifestyle. That in turn also makes it easier to make excuses for missing training sessions.

Keep it smooth, keep it relaxed
Roland Baltutis

... because you are in a boat with eight other people (who you might not even like that much) and you are all working as hard as you can, in unison, toward a common goal.

(That's why rowing is the best sport. Why it is the best exercise seems to have been covered pretty well.)

Doesn't take too much hand-eye/ foot-eye coordination like basketball or soccer ect. You're outside on the water. It's team and solo.
~Sara
