Rowpro suddenly stopped working

Post by rewarriner » November 17th, 2015, 5:40 pm

I have been running RowPro 4.3 on my Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro laptop under Windows 10. It has always worked perfectly. This evening it crashes as every time I run it. I have even tried running it in 2D but still it crashes. I have downloaded the software and performed a repair to the installation but it achieved nothing. Windows did install updates but not the November upgrade so I am stumped. Has anyone else experienced similar?

Crashes where? on start up or during a row?

Do you get the screen asking for the graphics selection when you restart it?

Possibility you need to send the error message to Digital Rowing.

It's the reason I'm still running Win 8.1, if its not broken don't fix it.

I would also leave your laptop running for a while and not use it, it could be doing something in the background that needs to finish.

Have you checked the event log?
What was the reason for the exception!

You should contact assist@digitalrowing.com about this.
Thanks for this. I have fired off an email to them.

It crashes when I try to set up a new session or when I try upload a previous row to the log book. So I never manage to get started.
Do you get the screen asking for the graphics selection when you restart it?
Yes and I have tried both 3d options, turned down the detail and finally tried using 2D. No of which should be needed as it is a pretty high spec. laptop and has been previously working perfectly with RowPro driving both the inbuilt and an extension monitor.
Possibility you need to send the error message to Digital Rowing.
The only message if from Windows saying RowPro has stopped working.
It's the reason I'm still running Win 8.1, if its not broken don't fix it.
It wasn't broken. Two days ago it ran fine yet last night it stopped working. I have reinstalled the program just to see if it would help yet still it crashes as soon as I try to use it.

Where do I find this?

Before I invest valuable rowing time in doing a complete Windows 10 clean installation I was curious to know if anyone else had found RowPro had suddenly stopped working. If the problem is unique to me I will do a clean install but if others have also come across the problem I guess I need to wait for a fix.

Thanks for all the comments so far. I will let you know if Digital Rowing get back to me.

easiest way is: (without the quotes)
"windows button" + "R"

then type

"eventvwr"

you want to look under windows protocols and then applications.

the messages are timestamped, so if you know the general time it happened you can look up the event and the error.

Has it lost your registration details ?

There is a user name and password in the user settings I think.

What happens when you try and go online ?

It should be throwing some sort of error message rather than the "stopped working and needs to close" type of crashing.

Hard to fix remotely, is your graphics driver up to date ?

Thanks for all the assistance. I was really trying to find out if the issue was common or limited to my own system. Judging by the comments it seems to be just my system.

I dug out the following from the logs as requested.
Faulting application name: RPEngine.exe, version: 4.300.0.13, time stamp: 0x54c9a4b5
Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 10.0.10240.16384, time stamp: 0x559f3b2a

Report ID: a102404c-9e66-42ae-a405-f6e63626f166
Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

There is always a related .NET error:
Application: RPEngine.exe

Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
Exception Info: System.Net.WebException
Stack:

at System.Threading._IOCompletionCallback.PerformIOCompletionCallback(UInt32, UInt32, System.Threading.NativeOverlapped*)

This is all a bit complicated for me but I guess it is something to do with Visual C++ 2008.

Just at the moment I can't even deactivate RowPro to perform a clean install which shows the annoying weakness of this form of on-line activation to genuine users.

With older versions of RP you had to do a couple of separate installs of the likes of the "Runtime" components but when I put 4.3 on the computer it went away and found these.

Really I don't understand anything about the .NET and the C++ runtime distributable or whatever it is, all I know is you must need it.

Perhaps something got deleted during an update or is now not compatible or something, like that *.dll file.

Sorry I cannot help more but at present I only use Win 10 for browsing the net and now that's with Chrome.

Well Digital Rowing disabled my licence remotely. I backed up my database and then performed a totally fresh install of Windows followed by RowPro. Guess what, it won't activate! Every time I try to use the activate button it won't keep a connection open to the Oarbits server. It just keeps connecting and disconnecting. I am using the same PC to connect to this forum so clearly Internet connectivity isn't an issue. I am so frustrated and concerned that I won't get this sorted out for the seasonal challenge next week. I have been using the program for years on various PCs including the one currently causing problems.

One further update. I have now managed to activate RowPro but it crashes in exactly the same was as before. Remember that it worked perfectly on the same machine for weeks previously. Clearly something has recently changed in Windows 10 that has made RowPro incompatible with my computer. I think it will be interesting to see if the same problem starts to crop up from other users.

Get another PC as a backup, got a second machine here ready to go because I run older hardware I had sticks of RAM dying on a regular basis and its very annoying to have happen 10minutes before a row.

Personally I hate Laptops, I like to build up a PC from parts and easily change the graphics card.

I have a second (and third) PC thanks. Digital Rowing have now twice reset my licence to allow me to install the software on a clean installation of Windows on my main PC and then on my backup PC which also runs Windows 10 and I ran into the same issue of it crashing whenever I pull up and interact with a dialogue box. I have to thank Pete at Digital Rowing for resetting the license on a Sunday, certainly good service. However it is now apparent the some recent update on Windows 10 is causing an issue. The only thing that the two computers have in common is the fact that they run Windows 10 (fully upgraded to 1511) and both use SSDs.

I have asked Digital Rowing to do a further reset so I can run the previous version of RowPro on my Vista machine to at least get things working until the problem is resolved.

Maybe so, certainly I have built enough PCs myself in the past but try putting a desktop system in your luggage so that you can use it in a hotel's gym when travelling! The Yoga 2 Pro is a very capable laptop especially with a clean install of Windows 10. It comes with an i7 processor, has high resolution graphics (higher than a Mac-book), 8Gb ram and a 128 Gb solid state drive (I upgraded mine to a 500Gb Evo SSD). It runs (or should I say ran) RowPro 4.3 in 4K graphics in smooth detail with all graphic options turned to maximum at above 45 fps so it is well capable. Add tent mode and it was clearly made with RowPro in mind!

Clearly sounds like a Win 10 problem then, glad I didn't take the upgrade on the RowPro PC as its now on everything else I own so currently I have no "Back-up" PC until the problem gets sorted.

Strange no one else is experiencing the same issue as yet here, perhaps most people are hanging back on older versions of Windows to run RowPro.

Hi,
I get exactly the same problem, but I've tried on a Windows 10 and Windows 7 laptop.

Did you get this resolved in the end and if so what was the fix?

I only wanted to try RowPro before deciding to buy it. Can't try it so won't buy it, obviously. :)
