Taff Attack
Here's an interesting factoid. Until recently, I mentally pronounced "seat5" like this; "say-at five". Like the cars (Seat). It was only some time in the past month or so that I thought "oh, hang on, it's probably seat, as in something I sit on".
Crazy.
Crazy.

HQ on the UK web site?
Interesting situation.
I was drawn to Taff Attack because of the friendly banter and useful information and encouragement I saw on the US site. I was not aware of the UK site until some reference was made to it.
Since we want to recruit new members I think that we should at least maintain a friendly presence on the US site so that we are accessible. And perhaps we could set up a team to monitor threads where newbies post - we could have a 'sales pitch' about Taff Attack and invite them to join us. For those outside the UK it could encourage participation in the CTC and logging metres. For people in the UK it could encourage them to come out to events also.
Writing the pitch would assist in determining what we are about. Right now I feel somewhat a 'misfit' as far as the CTC goes. The chatter last month and this seems to focus on getting into the medals; in January I felt the focus was on filling boats. In January I felt comfortable jumping in, even though I was at the bottom of the board. This month I am hesitant, knowing my 10K would be about 1 hour. I appreciate that the fast rowers motivate each other; however, a balance is required if we want to include all levels of rowers.
So bottom line - I propose that the team determine what it is all about (a mission statement) and then decisions can be made reflecting that.

As far as I'm concerned, it's both. Sure, the handful of us (them) who are at the top of the tree and are able to compete for a "medal" should do that. For the rest of us, it should be about doing the best we can, and trying to fill as many boats as we can in total.Marie wrote:The chatter last month and this seems to focus on getting into the medals; in January I felt the focus was on filling boats.
An aspect of the CTC that is pretty much under the radar at the moment, is that at the end of each month, teams should be awarded points based upon the number of completed qualifying boats. The reason this isn't so obvious is partially my fault; Matt Newman used to do the tables manually, but no longer does that. I intend to award points automatically at the end of each month, but haven't got around to doing that. So, effectively, the overall competition is hidden from view, and people only see the monthly one.
Once I bother to write the point-awarding code, everyone will see that even the bottom-placed boat for a team is worth something (1 point), and that will hopefully encourage more people to take part even though they know they're going to end up in boat V. =)
In fact, I think I'll do some manual tables today, just so people know where the teams stand at the moment.

Good point Daren. The medal thing is just a perk. The main thing is to do as best you can. Actually, the main thing is to have fun with the CTC. If you're not having fun, then let's talk. Maybe we can motivate ya.Daren wrote:As far as I'm concerned, it's both. Sure, the handful of us (them) who are at the top of the tree and are able to compete for a "medal" should do that. The point system sounds interesting too.

It would be terrific if during the month and at the end of the month we could see the standings. I didn't ever know at the end of the month which team 'won' - is there a place where the final results are posted?
It may be that the more experienced among us forget that this is a whole new world to the newcomers - new people, different terminology, virtual challenges, CTC - sometimes hard to figure out, with exciting opportunities.
Yes, knowing that a full boat is worth something to the team may well be motivation for people. If we can keep it inclusive, fun and encouraging, all the better.

Re: HQ on the UK web site?
Marie, if you look at www.ctc.com you can see the standings for the current month - the list of completed boats on the right hand side of the page. There's a drop-down box at the top of the page that will show you previous months, too. This afternoon, I'm going to see if I can write some code to make it automatically assign the points and produce an ongoing league table.Marie wrote:Daren,Daren wrote: An aspect of the CTC that is pretty much under the radar at the moment, is that at the end of each month, teams should be awarded points based upon the number of completed qualifying boats. . . . There's always plenty of talk around the current challenge on the UK site. This month's thread can be viewed through the link below:
http://www.concept2.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10435
Thought it might add an extra element to the CTC.
I'll be the first to admit, I've been frustrated through my own lack of involvement in the CTC (this being due to personal circumstances ) but will be keen to get myself in a boat for this month's challenge. As it's our challenge this month, I'd love to see as many Taff boats as possible. I don't care which boat I'm in as long as it's a full boat !

To me this shows the boats placed by time. I was meaning the the overall team standings that you spoke about with points allocated for each full boat. Is there somewhere else I should be looking for that?

Because we are the best looking (Krysta), best performing(Speedy), most welcoming(Everyone) team out there, and most importantly, we have the flashiest, shinyest kit around!todd wrote:I'm not sure of the benefits of joining a team. Can anybody explain why and why specifically TA?

Re: HQ on the UK web site?
Matt Newman posted some in the (old) CTC thread on the UK site, but there isn't anywhere that has them up to date. I'm going to try and produce something in the next hour or so.Marie wrote:I see the standings at http://www.c2ctc.com/

Firstly let's set your mind at rest. It's not a silly question. In fact it's one I get asked a lot. Here's what I generally respond with:
Benefits of joining a team will vary depending on what you want out of the sport and the team itself. For me, here are the Taff Attack specifics:
Camaraderie
The Taff Attack team are a great bunch of people that I find highly motivational and supportive. What ever your performance level is, you'll find someone close to you or just a bit better than you who can push you along. The Welsh are well known for their sense of humour (and singing and extra-curriculae activity with sheep ) and the team reflects this characteristic fantastically well (I'm still talking about the humour, not the singing or sheep thing!). Just take a look at the messages on our discussion thread to get an idea of what a great bunch of people we have in the team.
Website
We've got the basis of a great website to show off our team. While I admit it's still a work-in-progress, it's a solid start to work from.
All-In-One Kit
Without doubt, we have the best looking kit on the UK circuit all those that have one are proud to wear in in competition. When I wear it, I feel the real deal! Here's a photo of the me in the kit (yeh, I know, I'm normally shy but just this once...):
So, if you're the type who:
- likes to have fun
- is looking for motivational support to improve performances
- is a team player and wants to motivate others to improve
- wants to be part of a team that has a strong identity and purpose
- likes a laugh
then take a long, hard look at Taff Attack!
