Been a 400m guy mostly, generally ranked 10th - 15th nationally with times in the 53 to 54 seconds range. But after 1 too many injuries I've switched. My daughter rows w/ local high school so she's taught me proper form. In 2 weeks of rowing I've gotten my 2K down to 7:03 and hope it goes sub 7. Hope I can add to team miles and contribute some fun. Thanks again for providing an avenue to keep me motivated!! Row on!!!!
Wow, a track athlete from TrackTown, USA. So is there a bar there where they hang your picture when you switch to rowing? Impressive 2K times. Sub 7 seems right around the corner.
Welcome Stellar. You won't know what this means yet, but I think you might be lobbying for a reindeer name with that nickname.

Good thing you didn't have our rain. Scary dark tunnels are enough.
I'll have to get there sometime.
The Carolinas are getting pounded - keep your water wings ready, and stay dry. Seeing photos and video of the flooded streets....yikes!

Welcome back K2, and congrats to a wonderful accomplishment. Great scenery and I'm sure that finish line looked rather appealing also.
Richard...4 million meters is incredible Awesome job to you and to Ron, who is tearing up the meters for the challenge.

Hey K2, great write-up and awesome photos. If you but some red soil in there it would look like our outback.
But um, you're riding on the wrong side of the road!
Cheers, Baz

Great to see all the celebrations of milestones, and teammates being welcomed and welcomed back! Can you believe I was actually able to leave my computer for a couple of days?! Thanks to all of you for keeping things moving along and putting all those wonderfully hard earned meters in the team meter piggy bank!
Another episode....
It's easy to see why just the name of the event "Tour of the Moon" would appeal to a space traveling Lunie with a virtual destination of the moon! This bike event is often on the list of best Colorado rides because of its connection to the famed Coors Classic pro cycling event. The ride takes you from the Grand Junction Two Rivers Convention Center (aptly named for the Grand and Gunnison Rivers) out to the Colorado National Monument, climbs MANY miles up the monument, rushes you down a steep descent, and then loops back to the convention center. This was the year that I wanted to give it a go. I'd never been to the Monument, and now I want to go back.
Dramatic landscapes indeed ! There were many comments by riders that the ride should have been called "Tour of Mars" because of the red rocks. Very cool that the moon was visible throughout the day!
Daniel Schwen's photograph of Monument Canyon beats any that I was able to capture. The ride took us along the perimeter of much of Monument Canyon. This land first belonged to the Ute Indians, and many of the settlers that eventually took the land considered the canyons inaccessible. Once early explorers starting making some trails, it wasn't long before Grand Junction started lobbying for the Monument's designation as a National Park, and continue requests to designate this as a Wilderness Area for its preservation. Cattle ranchers would take their herds from the valley to the mesa and back each year using drives up the canyon sides.
The "average" grade was something that reduced my speed to about 7 mph...and 5 in the 10 percent inclines. And it went on and on. This is where some of the psychological training of doing an erging marathon or half marathon was invaluable. I knew that if I set a pace, I could continue that climb and be successful. I mentally broke the ride into segments, much like I do with a long distance rowing session, and got through the tough bits that way. I am sure that others on this team have done similar things - and all these add up to confidence builders when you are challenging yourself with a different exercise. The rowing also provides a wonderful foundation for cardio.
Ah...the tunnels. That's why I had the fancy headlamp on the helmet. There were three tunnels. The first two were very short, and you could practically see the end light when you first entered. But the third. Whoa. The third tunnel came up so quickly on the descent that it was just enough time to click your lights on. Would have been better to get the sunglasses off ....oh boy was it SO DARK. I could hardly see anything, but at least I knew I could be seen.
Balance Rock...I bet each of us were hoping that this didn't choose any moment too soon to give way...
Now that was a climb! K2 at Independence Monument
And so another adventure ends...thanks for sharing in the Tour of the Moon by reading about it...
Great report with the right graphics. A pleasure to read. An awesome achievement. Happy to learn some else shares my approach to long distances. Congratulations! Tombeur

Congrats, Dan, on your first million of this season!
With Free Spirits inching ahead of us and Ancients not that far behind, now would be an excellent time to work on million #2.
