Maestro, i remember we were having a discussion of force curves and you mentioned Calm Waters. I thought Shane Farmer looked to be moving his back early on the drive and we ended up defending a heterodox view of the sequence as coincident and blended. That brought in the teachings of Hollings and Dunn. There is always a fifth gospeller! And Xeno gives the game away about overlapping actions in his frame by frame vid. Incidentally, Hollings has a vid currently on Row2K showing two Olympians whose hands away or hands out of bow is simultaneous with the back hinging fwd. I don't actually know from applebutter about sculling but we are all encouraged to watch one or more demos of impeccable form. Surely we're allowed to look at them free of the requirement to parrot the current consensus from morning to nite.Jack

Yes, well you'll get plenty of videos from John during the camp. He goes through a bunch of olympic videos to make the case that the top folks aren't doing it the way US Rowing teaches. They are both very passionate about it and frankly make a great case, I was thoroughly convinced. Whatever the case, the camp is great. I'd like to do it again some day.

Erging and OTW are assuredly different animal crackers. Ergs don't run across the floor and then check their progress when the puller straight arms the handle.

Nice work Magnus. What was your average split for 500 - about 1:44?

It shows that you use a high drag, you first set your back and pull a bit before you start using your legs. In a boat this would not work, you would push the boat in the water. Should be, legs first, with this high drag not easy to do.

Magnus' average pace 1:44.9. Pushing the bow under wouldn't be that bad in terms of depressing boat speed but it would be wasteful of energy. Diving into the catch and overcompressing would be even more wasteful--of boat speed. He's avoiding that. But erg and water never the twain shall meet until someone throws one in. Jack

Cycle 2: Speed Pyramid

Cycle 1 average: 144.8
Cycle 2 average: 144.6 AVG SPM: 35

250: 144.4
500: 144.5
750: 144.7
1000: 145.5
750: 145.0
500: 144.9 (this one was very hard. Lost form and rythm)
250: 138.8

First cycle I really made my time on the last 500 and 250. This cycle I really tried to go out with more effort, but realized at the last 500 why that is dangerous! I'm pretty happy to have fought it all the way through.

So not even that high, but you clearly first pull a good bit with your back, and only than you start driving your legs.
I would lower the drag a bit more, and try to get a " whip" in your stroke. Try to start the drive with a strong lower back, keep your shoulders in front of you. Drive with the legs, second bring in the back and finish with the arms.

G dub, good one, the middle 750/1k/750 are often close to 2 k speed.

Henry, I think I was near my current limits through those ones! I feel like I am very close to 7:00, but just a hair slow or not fit enough I fear. Maybe these last couple of weeks will get me closer! It is what it is I guess!

Edited because I realized that it was my idol Henry that said something about the 750,1000, 750, not Magnus!

Decided to forgo the exquisite pleasure of the CTC as well as the chore du jour. Little extra flem this morning and I've got half an acre of broaf lead weeds to mow with a push/rotary mower, some garden work, and pack a bag. The T de F got in the way this morning (Valley of the Tarne) so I have to hustle. I may be senile but I'm far from insane! Jack
