All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 7.7.15

Post by Kona2 » July 8th, 2015, 1:05 pm

My condolences as well, Kristine. We look forward to your return to active rowing, and wish you less of the drama that life deals us all.

After a couple of days of less than optimal time for exercise, I went in search of a gym here in the Grand Canyon state. Tucson has SO MANY bike paths, but alas...I did not bring a bike with me. It's also a bazillion degrees hot out there as I have mentioned previously. Off I went to the Morris Udall Recreation Center in search of a rowing machine. Well they had a rowing machine, but it is not a Concept2. Gasp. Instead, it is called a Fluid Rower E520 or something like that. And the whoooooosh that was created was fluid, not air. Still, there was a constant stream of people occupying this lone rowing machine, and I think I'm going to try and give it a go later today. The rule sets for this cardio area said you had to bring your own towel to wipe down the equipment (not a paper towel in sight), and I hadn't brought one....so I walked the track for 50 minutes in air conditioned comfort. It was a lot of laps on the 1/10 of a mile track, but what a deal for a daily use fee of six quarters...yep, $1.50 for use of facility. Wowzer. Don't get me wrong, I love my Concept2 equipment, but the only gym around here with a Concept2 series charges $15 a day....so we will make do with a different machine for a little while. Rowing is rowing,

Meanwhile, you have all been feeding the meter piggy bank and that little oinker is getting heavier with all those meters. Great work by all.

Season meters as of 68/365 = 26,224,716 m

Total meters on the day = 377,886 m

Image Another episode....

I went hiking on July 4th in the Snow Mountain area. It was a short hike up to a waterfall, and there were quite a few trekkers on the path. Originally, Snow Mountain was called Sheep Mountain (of course it was) in honor of all the sheepherders in the region. But I digress...which is what these bunny trails are anyway. Driving or biking along western highways often gives a glimpse of some unusual rock formations...and here and there, a few rock monuments or cairns. The one below is near Gillette Wyoming, and is a monument to sheepherders. Since these cairns were often along a ridge, I wondered if they were wayfinding markers or monuments, and now I see that there is a whole series of these things to hike up to, etc. Some say that this is how the shepherds kept busy while watching flocks, and maybe this is so. Each monument is unique.

And, finally, all this was triggered by a Bizarro cartoon in this morning's paper:

Is that kind of like the one that the Princess Bride bought for Kevin Spacey in House of Cards?
(Which he quickly broke; not like our sturdy Concept2 machines.)

Yeah, that skunk thing threw me a curve too, but I just let it slide until you mentioned it.
So I looked it up, and ...

While most of the skunk diet is insect-based, these animals may also devour small, relatively helpless animal prey, as well. Field mice, voles and rabbits may all be targeted by skunks, as well as ground-nesting birds. Skunks may even eat the eggs or flightless young of ground-nesting birds. Other small, defenseless prey may include fish, reptiles and amphibians like frogs.
But it doesn't sound like a skunk would try to kill an adult rabbit. I would think that only an infant rabbit could be considered small helpless prey to a skunk.

Rabbits definitely rodents. Cute rodents, but rodents. I cracked up when I read the article listed above - something about try not to let your dogs chase bunnies. We have so many bunnies that my dogs think they are their playmates, although K9 Kona will still take a gallop at them here and there. Bunny fever, hantavirus. You'd think we would have gotten rid of the plague some time ago, but no.

Thanks, everyone, for the well wishes for Mom. Just got word today that the results say benign. Blessings for sure.
