accessing output of the PM4

I hope this is the right group.

I've been a lightweight programmer (perl, shell scripting, some C, assembler forever ago) for years. I'm interested in being able to row with my eyes closed, in a meditative way, but I'd like to have some audible indicators if I'm in a pre-determined heart-rate zone, too low, or too high. Is this a simple application to write? I'm a Unix and Mac guy and most definitely not a Windows guy. Is there a simple API that I could use to access my heart rate from the PM4? Is there a simpler approach if I ignore the PM4 altogether and capture the heart rate info directly from my ANT chest transmitter? Are there heart rate watches that will give you a different beep when your heart rate is too low vs. when it's too high so I can adjust my effort and breath without opening my eyes?
