To all the experienced Oarsmen,

If the water is perfect, smooth, no wind, cool, and no current. I know get real! This is a what if question.
If you took the average erg times for all four oarmen in a 4+ how comparable is that to a on water 2K time under the best of conditions?

Cheers

Stephen

That would depend largely upon the quality of the crew. But from my experiences with the University of Miami women I'd say they'd probly be comparable. If you have a boat of not so experienced rowers the on water time would be slower. If you were looking at like a national team 4+ they might be faster. I'm just guessing here tho. Hope this helps.

Heather
F20 170 lbs 2k 7:32.2

This page shows the finals times at Sidney 2000.
http://www.infoplease.com/ipsa/A0876083.html

The 4+ is no longer in the Olympic programme. Looks like the 4- (first 3: 5:56 - 57), have similar times to their erg times, and I'd guess a 4+ would be 20 - 30s slower.
1x is almost a minute slower (6:48 - 50) a 4x is a bit faster and the 8 (5:33-35) have times that would be difficult to beat on an erg.

The erg is less technique dependent as AB says, and also more weight dependent than boats: it doesn't sink into the water to compensate for greater crew weight. Goliath no doubt would have got good erg times, but have been beaten by David in a 1x.
