Do any of you think that a sub 15min 5K will ever be rowed on the erg? To achieve this you would have to have an average split of 1:29.9, which would bring you in at 14:59.

The current fastest time I can find is Matthew Pinsent (GBR) with a time of 15:11.0 that is an average split of 1:31.1

In simple terms, can anybody actually row 2 x 2K at sub 6.00 pace one after the other and then a sub 3.00 minute 1K straight after, I can’t wait for the day. And who will be the first man/woman to do it?

Sir Pirate
Of course, all that has to happen is someone that is comfortable at 1:29.9 for 2500M decide to do the second half. The question I think would be, what would motivate them to bother? Olaf Tufte and another guy recently did 10 x 5K with equal rest at 1:40 (100K 2 man relay), do you really think these guys can't do things you can barely imagine?

- Paul Smith

Sir Pirate, don't forget Cracknells 15:09 (1:30.9)

In terms of can it be done then there is no doubt in my mind, the problem is the 2 or 3 people in the world capable of it are not interested in times for anything other than 2k.

Possible suspects:
Seijowski 2k 5:37.0 (1:24.25) 14:59.9 5k = 2k + 5.74
Waddell 2k 5:38.0 (1:24.50) 14:59.9 5k = 2k + 5.49
Shurmei 2k 5:39.4 (1:24.85) 14:59.9 5k = 2k + 5.14

In terms of power output Seijowski has the easiest job with a 17.9% decrease in power (Waddell 17.2, Shurmei 16.2), if I relate that to my own times I get a 5k time of only 16:51.9, against my actual 16:35.7 using my best 2k of 6:19.0

In terms of actual ability however I think Waddell would have it hands down, there have been rumours of him pulling 5:34 in training shortly after he set his record, and even when not training specifically for rowing (Americas cup) he can pull 5:42. Combine that with a UT2 pace of around 1:42, I know who i'd put my money on.

Ash

It may be possible for a few people, but for me I see no real point in that for a 5K, 6Ks seem more important from my standpoint. Mainly because i'm a junior and we dont do 5Ks, just 6ks.

It's not a matter of if, but when someone will go under 15 for the 5K. It's just a matter of time, especially since erging is a relatively new and somewhat growing activity. As more athletes get involved with erging and those, such as yourself, currently involved develop, we're going to see times we thought near impossible to reach especially those beyond the 2K distance that so many have been focused upon. Some who wouldn't be great 2kers will be great at middle or longer distances. Of course, it will never take off to any large degree unless racing at distances other than just a 2K become popular. Also, we'd have to see a lot more races in the US to keep people motivated. It's unlikely that will happen. The necessity of having enough ergs to use for racing likely precludes this from happening. Also, the US is so large, it would be hard to have enough ergs in the all the different areas or transport them to make a longer race schedule work.

Will we ever see an erg "Olympics" with racing by large numbers of competitors at distances from a 100m sprint to a marathon? Unlikely.
