And now...another episode of As The Shamrock Spins....

Blame it on the boomerang. It arrived with yesterday's mail, and a note from Mom that said "I thought you should have this. I wonder what kind of wood they used?" Mom is the queen of bunny trails of the mind, and I guess this apple didn't fall too far from that tree. About 40 years ago, she toured Australia and New Zealand and picked up some interesting souvenirs. Now that she is downsizing, I (like many of you in similar situations) find that I am inheriting some things that are of interest. And some that are not. But this boomerang, well I think it brought a wave of mystique with it. Turning to one of my favorite resources, I find that there are two primary kinds of boomerang's : the hunting kind and the returning kind. This one is a hunter. The mystique part is that which happens when you run into something so unexpected that it throws your mind off its usual trails, and makes you think of travel and adventure.

I grabbed the numbers early today, but didn't have time to post them - so all the palindromes should still be in place and visible. Instead of posting, I went out to test ride a bunch of different mountain bikes. This era of distracted drivers, and a couple of friends lost to road cycling accidents, has kept me off the bike. I miss biking. This past weekend, I explored a few trails that are within a reasonable distance, and decided to give mountain biking a try. I picked out a bike, and the shop is getting it set up for me. So, in the meantime, between boomerangs and bikes, I did actually row some today.

Some of you will be reaching the magical "got my meters 25 days in a row and FINISHED the Challenge" with tomorrow's row or ski-erg. I will have participated, but not finished it...so I will contribute to the World Erg Challenge...and happily we are doing an AWESOME job with this one!

Yes, it's definitely the boomerang's fault.
I was looking at images of boomerangs to see if there was one that particularly struck my fancy, which led me to thinking about scenarios ending with the thought "How did I get here again", which led me to an early memory of seeing Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak in Bell Book and Candle. I remember a scene in the movie where Kim Novak attempts to convince Jimmy Stewart of her witchly powers with a spell that prevents him from leaving her store, which he promptly dismisses as a load of hooey as he goes to the door, only to find himself walking back into the store instead of out to the street. Somehow this scene left a strong impression on my young mind. Ah, nothing like a little magic...
And Pyewacket has just reminded me that it was completely predictable that this old memory flooded back into my consciousness in the month of Pi.


Ah, but I am procrastinating. This whovian had better start chalking up another tally mark before it is time to leave for work.

Another episode....

Saturday evening, after booking the event a month prior, it was FINALLY time for a group of 8 of us to try our abilities at solving a locked room puzzle...otherwise known as the Boulder Enigma Escape Room. These escape puzzles have been popping up here in the US after enjoying popularity abroad. The premise is fairly simple...you, and your friends or your "new friends" if you've not met these people before, are locked in a scenario room for 60 minutes. You have 60 minutes to solve the clues that allow you to unlock the door. The success rate of escape is variable, but this particular one has a success rate of only 30 percent. There are no spoilers contained in this write up. This one was called "The Missing Scientist, Part I". A University professor working on a project that could save the world, or end it, has vanished. The University officials are closing in on the rooms, and you must find the schematics left behind and escape before they arrive. The door shuts, the lock clicks, and the clock starts winding down. It was awesome. We were SO close to escape, but the minutes ran out. We would certainly approach a puzzle such as this differently now that we've been through one of them, but in the meantime.... I highly recommend this as an entertaining event. Your abilities to communicate, strategize and discern what is important and what isn't will be challenged.

Saturday evening, after booking the event a month prior, it was FINALLY time for a group of 8 of us to try our abilities at solving a locked room puzzle...otherwise known as the Boulder Enigma Escape Room. These escape puzzles have been popping up here in the US after enjoying popularity abroad. The premise is fairly simple...you, and your friends or your "new friends" if you've not met these people before, are locked in a scenario room for 60 minutes. You have 60 minutes to solve the clues that allow you to unlock the door. The success rate of escape is variable, but this particular one has a success rate of only 30 percent. There are no spoilers contained in this write up. This one was called "The Missing Scientist, Part I". A University professor working on a project that could save the world, or end it, has vanished. The University officials are closing in on the rooms, and you must find the schematics left behind and escape before they arrive. The door shuts, the lock clicks, and the clock starts winding down. It was awesome. We were SO close to escape, but the minutes ran out. We would certainly approach a puzzle such as this differently now that we've been through one of them, but in the meantime.... I highly recommend this as an entertaining event. Your abilities to communicate, strategize and discern what is important and what isn't will be challenged.
