Why is that?

cheers

Ranger seems to be quite the thinker and tinkerer, and athlete.

Yes, a bit obsessive, but there seem to be a lot of folks putting more than 1, 2 ,or 3 hours a day into their training here. The pot calling the kettle black ?

Doesn't hold the record anymore ? Ahem, so one person, at the moment, on the planet is a bit better. Congratulations to that person, who also is working very very hard to be able to perform at that INCREDIBLE level, along with the rest of you who are outstanding athletes past your 30's.

Ranger has gotten a bit egotistical, but at least for being at the top of what he loves. It is, by the way, a bit of an indication of edging on ... shudder ... overtraining.

I, for one, have never understood the mindset of athletes who seek to teardown or putdown others doing better than they are. Use them for inspiration, or motivation. But also congratulate them.

So Ranger does things differently. He's not afraid to try. If it did not work, he would have given up on it. He has an idea, he tests it out. What works he tries to continue to refine.

The earth is not at the center of the universe, but folks thought so for a very long time. Of course, now we know it so big, maybe it is closer to the center than we thought.

But that's obvious I do post some results now and than. You never do .........

The question was and still is: Yes you have done very well in the past just rowing without to much concern about your stroke.
Now You only only talk and never ever post something you really perform. It's talk about teh bush a little bit, you mention paces, distances and rests but you are never precies about it. So some off us are curieus and want to see some real results. thats all!

But if you rowed 20-30K at 16.2 SPI @ 20 spm instead of 4K, tried to row as far as you could before you needed a break, instead of a set 500m, and took breaks of 15 seconds or so instead of 1', you would be further down the line.

If you want to catch Ripley, the target for you in terms of low rate rowing is pretty clear: 30'r20 @ 1:43. That's 15.6 SPI.

To catch Watt, I need 13.7 SPI for 30'r20. That's 1:48.6

The catch Hastings, I need 11.5 SPI for 30'r20. To the extent that 30' r20 may point to 70% of your 2k wattage, 1:44 pace (311w) for the half hour will do. For that, watch my January CTC challenge.

To the extent that 30' r20 may point to 70% of your 2k wattage, you get what you need to catch Watt right.

However, to the extent that 30' r20 may point to 70% of your 2k wattage, to catch Dennis' 6:40.8 you will need to average 244w r20 for the half hour. That's 12.2 spi, not 11.5, and 1:52.8 pace, not 1:54.5.

As for the predictive efficacy of my 8 x 500 "workout," apparently you missed the intended sarcasm....

[quote=ranger,Dec 18 2005, 02:49 AM]

BTW, I row OTW now, too. My next goal is to try to win the 55-59 hwt OTW US Nationals.

But, heck, you are so right! I am just a 55-year-old English professor having some fun with a hobby.

No big deal.

ranger

Just one thing at a time please Ranger. Get your 55-59 lwt erg WR first.
I don't think winning the 55-59 hwt OTW US Nationals is a realistic short term goal for you. As you are still only relatively new to OTW rowing, you may find that your new rowing stroke that you keep talking about, may not be suitable for moving a boat. Were still waiting to see how it moves a flywheel let alone a boat. Don't you still row with your oars running along the water?

History shows that big time ergers like yourself have difficulty transfering their awesome power from an erg to a boat. Graham Benton I believe is still trying. You have obviously tried without success yet. There is also an Aussie, Justine Sires, who pulled 5:46.7 in 2001, had his eyes on erg WR and National OTW team, but didn't make either.

Perhaps you are just an English professor having some fun with a hobby. However if you devote the majority of your living day (and a fair share of the night) to one thing, is that still called a hobby?

Rockin Roland

Then I have a day like anyone else. I do my training when my family is sleeping. The only thing I give up is a couple of hours of watching TV at night. I go to bed at 9 p.m. or so and wake up at 3 a.m. I only sleep six hours. I am done with my training and breakfast by 9 a.m. Then I have twelve hours for other things. "The majority of your living day (and a fair share of the night)? Hardly.

So, if you want to characterize my commitment to training that way, I am happy. Most Americans dedicate their free time to watching late night TV. I dedicate my free time to rowing (and other physical trianing) early in the morning.

Of course, if those who watch late-night TV also get some exercise, however mild, they actually take more of their productive time with their exercise than I do. Many folks work out after work before dinner, etc. I don't.

To each his own.

ranger
