Model D Handle Not Retracting

Post by rodneysherrard » January 20th, 2015, 9:37 am

Hi,

My model D has lost tension when it's supposed to retract. I changed the shock cord already which has adequate tension but to no avail.

Anyone got anything else to suggest??

Thanks!

Rod.

I've only changed a shock cord once, but if the handles isn't retracting I assume that you didn't install it correctly. Was it broken when you replaced it? Go through all the installation steps again to figure out where it is stuck. Make sure all the pulleys and gears are turning as they should, and that the cord and chain are routed correctly.

The cord is not routed correctly or there is s a problem with the bearings or chain roller bearings. Check inside that everything is rotating free.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies. Had another look and oiled bearings and that seemed to do the trick - the handle is now retracting quickly. One thing though - the small cover at the back of the fly-wheel (which I removed in order to route the shock cord through the wheels) is very, very difficult to screw back on. It doesn't appear to matter whether it is reattached or just placed on - does it matter??

The cover up at the front of the machine (is this the one you're referring to?) acts as a foot when you stand the front on its nose for storage so it's best to reattach it. Also I'm baffled by the idea that a little oil fixed a non-retracting handle situation. I would take another look at the cord and chain routing to make sure you've done it correctly. Basically they should run free with no twists or kinks or interference between them. Under home use a cord should last for years. C2JonW

Replacing the end cap is easy if you start the screw into the retaining hook before offering it up to the machine, then use a screwdriver to hook it over the horizontal bar and then tighten.
