Ah! It suddenly became clear to me as a random thought in the middle of last night. We had opposite perspectives of the body angle. You saw it as the amount of lean from vertical. To me it brought up the images that NavHaz used to post showing lines for the torso, thigh and shin. I was locked into thinking of the angle that the torso makes with the horizontal when I used the term narrowing. Sorry about the put on comment.

Hi Bob.

No worries.

You are correct in your random thought. That is how i was thinking. But, this is why it is very important to state datums of reference whenever angles are discussed.

Isn't it great to dream about ERGING :D

So, to confirm - your previous post about narrowing of angle to the rail still holds true?

BTW - I found this video and ask if this shows a really good example of shooting the slide?

She does just a very little bit of it on a couple of the slow movement strokes, probably because she is trying to concentrate on too many things at once. In the normal speed drives, it looks to me like she is holding her torso angle very well in the early part of the drive. To me it seems that she is opening (i.e. starting the backswing) later than normal, but that is not uncommon. There should be very little, if any, overlap of leg much and arm pull, but the back swing sort of bridges the other two movements.

Here is another discussion on the topic from the earlier forum posts. It may be of some use to you. Unfortunately the videos are no longer available, but the discussion is valuable.

Check out this site. It shows that, in 2 (DDR and Adam) of the 4 rowing styles, the backswing starts quite early, a tiny fraction of a second after the legs start.

Thanks bob.

But isn't the girl reducing her lean angle ( to rail) in relation the seat ?

I see very little there and it is only on the second and third drives of the slow, completely non-integrated strokes. That doesn't mean much, since the non-integrated rowing is completely artificial. At the start of those drives, it looks to me like she holds the angle quite well. It was only at the ends of the drives that she does a final leg extension that narrows the angle. Serious slide shooting is done at the start of the drive, where the initial, most effective part of the leg push is wasted. I don't see that in that video, especially the part where she is rowing normally and not trying to demonstrate each separate part of the stroke.

Here is a video that shows several of the most common rowing faults and ways to correct some of them. Unfortunately, bum-shooting is that last one shown, and I didn't see any specific remedy for it.

Ok thanks bob

So her lean angle has not changed before entering the Catcth, during the catch and after the catch?

I didn't say anything about before "entering" the catch. Obviously she does a little extra lean just before the catch. The narrator makes a point of saying that. It doesn't have anything to do with slide shooting, so what is your point?

Greg's answer works for me in that it suggests the back/core/hip hinge unitization that shoukd occur right at the beginning of drive. The slower rate suggested by hjs should give time to avoud the grass waving in the wind effect and the additional fwd lean coincident with the beginning of leg push. Jack
