Glad to hear it, Ron! I wasn't going to row yesterday either but thought of that challenge goal... Made my hubby wait for dinner. Only 30 minutes yesterday but better than nothing!

Row strong, team!

9 million meters as of this morning- am feeling pretty banged up - but so far the aches and pains are tolerable.
There were a lot of leaves to mulch before the snow hit last weekend- and that is what did me in.
But the mulch is now in the compost bins and I am dealing with the trials and tribulations that come with hard work, arthritic joints and the aging process-
Am I just like a fine old wine- smooth and tasty --- or more like a nice aged cheese- pungent and tangy  .

It feels great rowing to keep warm in these frigid temperatures!

Interesting article in today's 1/7/2015 NY Times "How Exercise Keeps Us Young."

To quote: "Active older people resemble much younger people physiologically, according to a new study of the effects of exercise on aging. The findings suggest that many of our expectations about the inevitability of physical decline with advancing years may be incorrect and that how we age is, to a large degree, up to us."

Row strong, teammates, and keep young! :D

In kind of the same vein... a good friend sent this link to me via Facebook. I think it is something we rowers/ergers knew in our hearts all along!

I'm always inspired by people who stay active into their later years. We will have a 88 or 89 year old in the Denver rowing competition this year, at least I'm assuming he will be there, he shows up every year, and last year he posted a 2k in just under 9 min. which is remarkable to me. http://lonetreevoice.net/stories/Super- ... gold,66019 This is an article about him. I hope I'm still in the erg saddle when I'm in my 80's. Thanks for sharing the articles Bobbie and Jamie.

For the past month or so I have consistently managed to get my stroke rate down to just below 20 strokes per minute, without sacrificing too much speed. Prior to that I was at about 22/23 SPM. When I first started a few years ago I was up around 32 SPM. I have no idea if there is an ideal stroke rate, but 20 SPM feels pretty good right now.

Jim,
I am working on staying between 18-20 for my long rows- which is not easy. I start out a little faster as I warm up. Then I settle in- and just pull faster if I want to go faster for a short while.
Before the recent Holiday season I was working on a once-a-week high intensity interval regimen- adding one interval per week- plus doing the low stroke rate training. The one time per week interval training was making me faster too.
Between the Challenges and the holidays with their forced feeding high-caloric and high-fat food consumption, the interval training fell by the wayside.
Now I find myself squeezing into my suddenly tight-fit gym shorts and waddling around the indoor track to warm up before I sit down on the erg where i am stroking at the lower 18-20 spm.

Thanks Gary, I feel better about rowing sub-20 SPM knowing I am in good company! And between Halloween and New Years ... it is pretty hard not to put on a pound or five!

My resistance setting is currently at a "7", which gives me a drag factor of between 165 and 170. 30 years ago I would always set it at a "10" ... I have no idea what drag factor that produces, but it is a big number. It would surely kill me now.

Jim,
We have new ergs at the gym- model D's with PM5's and it is easy to check drag factor on these up-to-date PM's. I try to keep mine below 130- which is a damper setting of about 5 + /- on these new ergs.
On the old machines I'd keep the damper at 6 or 7 or 8 mostly- they were somewhat old and out of adjustment I suspect.
You are still pulling pretty hard if the drag factor is at 165 or 170- that is high.
I am too old for that.
