Had my erg for 1 year, what maintenance should I do now?

Post by Hanzo » December 1st, 2014, 4:01 am

I bought my Model D erg last desember, and I have turned out to be the best piece of training equipment I ever bought. Not sure how many miles I have on it, but I'm rowing every other day and really enjoying the experience. So fare I have only cleaned the rail the seat slides on, and oiled the chain. After one year of use, is it time to clean out the fan? I see Concept recommend using a vacum cleaner to clean out the fans, would I risk doing damage to anything in there using a compressor and clean it out with pressurized air? I find this usually gets out alot more junk compared to the vacumcleaner, but I'm unsure how robust the fans are.

Dust is a great boon to the erger, sooner or later the drag factor drops to the right level. However if below 130 on damper 10 (or if there's vibration) it needs cleaning.

I wouldn't use compressed air, it'll blow dust all over the house. Pity to spread it out when you made such an effort to collect it. If the vac with a brush on the end is not enough, use a smaller brush between the blades, the dust there can pack quite hard.

You won't have enough dust to need a compressor or a vacuum cleaner.

Just loosen the screws, don't remove them, disconnect the clip that holds the ends of the mesh together and you can slide the mesh out. That makes it a much easier job than a full scale cleaning.

Check the PM battery status and the U-bolt wear on the handle. You can meassure it with a calliper and compare it with the part of the bolt that is not exposed for wear.
Even if you use the concept 2 everyday, you can't wear it out if you take care of it.
