Workout Tracking / Achievements

Post by jinxremoving » November 17th, 2014, 2:55 pm

Hey all,

This is going to sound ridiculous to you all, I am sure, but I have been tracking my workouts in Excel (exporting from the Concept Utility) and then moving the Logbook.csv data into my sheet. The end result is a monthly tracking of meters, weight, waist size. It tracks my workouts, training band splits. I even put in a field to let me know when to oil the chain and clean the flywheel. I integrated the Challenges found in the logbook so that I can have a quicker way to look at how close/far I am without having to dig around the concept site (which I find cumbersome).

That said, and I love me some videogames, I added achievements -- for instance:
100k Meters Rowed (Lifetime)
200k ...
500k ...
1M ...
Sub 2m 500m
Sub 1:45 500m
Sub 1:30 500m

Etc., etc.

When one of those fields is "TRUE", it gives me a little check mark. Just crossed the 200k line yesterday. :P

I am new to rowing, so those will look like child's play to you all, but it's just about finding fun ways to stay engaged. To that end, what "achievements" would you want to see/track/etc?

I am happy to share the sheet, will post a JPG of it later when I get home (it's ~6mb and the forum software blocks "large" uploads).

Just looking for your thoughts. :)

I did the same stuff with a MySQL database, a perl program to capture the data and a few PHP programs to display it. I suspect that may be more versatile than an Excel spreadsheet.

Accessible with Firefox, Internet Exploder, Safari, Opera or even Lynx.

I mean to modify, make changes, etc. And who uses Lynx anymore? :P But hey, send it to me, I'd love to take a look and see what it does.

I have an Excel document for a diary. (And I also use Endomondo (a smartphone app similar to MapMyRun, Runkeeper etc) that works as a diary and has decent stats generation if you pay the $20 a year for the premium version of the site.)

First worksheet is a simple list of all of my rows, with columns for: a session name, like "hard 5k" or "4 x 1500m intervals" or "8k @ 22 spm" or whatever; date; distance in metres; time; /500m pace (automated); spm; watts/spm; and comments. This way it's easy to highlight, say, a month of work and check that I've not slackened in terms of distance, or not put in enough speed work etc., or highlight the year's work to see the metres count for the year etc.

Second worksheet is a progressive list of season's bests for the standard distances (2k, 5k, 6k, 30 minutes, 10k and 60 minutes).

Third worksheet has schedule ideas. (But as I learn from reading this forum, I find myself changing those schedules quite a bit anyway.)

I also have a pace calculator on a fourth worksheet based on the very rough rule of thumb for double the distance = add 5 seconds to /500m pace. Mathematics and logarithms, baby!

But honestly, this year, as I've been rowing more or less every day, and twice a day recently, keeping the diaries updated has become more of a chore than a source of inspiration. I go to the schedules sheet to remind me what I have on for the next session, and that's about it. And sometimes I might just do a different row anyway! Inspiration is mainly coming from imagining where I might be in a month's time.

Hi All,

It seems to me that writing custom codes or using Excel for logging workouts is a bit of a re-inventing-the-wheel excercise. I am also very keen on keeping track of my progress and have been using SportTracks for years now - one can track various sports disciplines and have stats at each angle - especially with various plugins available for ST. You do not need a webversion subscription, a stand-alone PC app is good enough. Excel is quite useful for creating power-zone based workouts, like in cycling - I discovered it recently and was going to write a post about it here soon.

Have a look at ST here:
