Does EPOC manifest as deep breathing post-workout?

Post by jackarabit » September 28th, 2014, 12:44 pm

Assuming, as I do, that the Excessive Post(exercise) Oxygen Consumption state can be reached by heart-rate based TR interval work and anaerobic sprinting on the erg, should one feel a conscious compulsion to take deep breaths afterwards? I notice that when I cap HR at 145b/m, which is top of AT band in my case, I experience no conscious need for high volume respiration after the warmdown row. Venturing higher in the HR bands (highest I've seen is 159b/m), I find myself conscious of the need to take deep breaths for 30' to an hour after the workout. Does anyone else experience this? Is it garden variety exercise asthma or something more? Is there any correlation at all to EPOC level training and recovery states? I am acutely aware that my particular level of cardiovascular and pulmonary function or dysfunction may have a great deal more to do with what I'm experiencing than does EPOC. I would like to get some soundings on this from rowers in a broad range of age, medical history and state of physical conditioning. This forum may be a bit tilted toward the extremely fit and functional but there are a number of folks who, like myself, have some experience with obesity, metabolic syndrome, COPD, pneumonia, and ? I'd appreciate the opinions and experience of all of you. Jack

As long as your hf is above its normal pace, your body is working harder and thus using more energy. If your lungs are not great, you could notice elevated breathing also.

I have never noticed this. In all the literature that I have seen about EPOC, it seems like it is just a sustained elevation in resting heart rate after vigorous exercise. I think you would just have a slightly elevated respiration rate to go with it.
