TimbukTOO Team Room
Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
John- you are a real trooper- working hard and enjoying it still.
Keeping weight off, once you have lost it, is the real challenge for those of us who have had weight issues.
We just had a garage sale, and in getting ready for it there were boxes of old files I came across- and in going through old papers, I found a couple of charts I made, projecting my weight loss goals from about 12 years ago when I weighed 325 lb!
Back then I thought I could shed 100 lb. in 15 or 18 months. It took 7 years to lose and maintain 60% of the 100 lb. I have lost.
Even now I am trying to lose about 10% more - but am in no hurry- am enjoying the weight-lifting- and a modified high protein and fat- low carb diet- so over another 24 month period, I'll be down to what I weighed when I was in Junior HS.
It takes continuing vigilance.
Long-term studies on the 5% or so of people who successfully maintain a significant weight loss ( more than 20% of body weight ) show that an almost religious devotion to consistent arduous exercise is mostly what we have in common.
Ill be in SF for week- my gym away from home will be closed for the Jewish New Year- I may try and hit the Presidio YMCA on Thursday or Friday- but regardless, I'll keep the Challenge inb mind and will work to exceed my goal.
Happy New Year- to both the Jewish People amongst us and the non-Jews too!

How'd you like to commute to your rowing workout this way? I'd love to see them getting on and off!

It is probably my fault, I bet I was accidentally on an older page in the forum. Oops!damselfly wrote:Hey guys, that Bill Hawthorne post was from 2008. He's not on our team anymore, more's the pity!

Way to go Gary! Sounds like your own journey has been incredible. I keep meaning to register with the national weight loss registry. All the exercise has a big effect on energy and attitude too. I try to put out a lot of positive energy, and it just keeps coming back! Happy New Year!garygOP wrote:John- you are a real trooper- working hard and enjoying it still.

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
I figured out that for me, the total cost per year for my C2 is a bit over $25! The resale value is so high, the maintenance costs are so low, the (rarely needed) replacement parts are so reasonable and so DIY-friendly...johnb wrote:So team, I am really excited! I have applied gentle pressure for close to a year now, never raising the subject of buying my own Concept 2 rower. Always just raving about it and talking about all things rowing. Today at the breakfast/brunch table my wife says, 'Well, how expensive is a good one of those? Hallelujah! Hallelujah! I need to proceed carefully, but I see my own personal C2 appearing over the horizon, apartment dwelling space issues not withstanding.
As a fellow apartment-dweller, it suffices for me to put it in the front of my apartment, not over the downstairs neighbor's bedroom. It sounds like a large fan downstairs, which is not disturbing to the disabled woman who lives there, almost completely in the back area of her apartment.
Living in Brooklyn, you may have the advantage of people expecting noise pollution, but the disadvantage of people tending to be, shall we say, more strident in asserting their rights. There's also the issue of creaky floors in most Brooklyn homes, which can amplify your C2's whirring. If it becomes a problem, you may need to buy a "cow mat" to put under your machine - solid enough so your C2 doesn't move side to side, absorbent enough to muffle over 80% of the sound...

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
Lisa, where DO you get those photos?
When I bought my C2, I think it was 2001 or 2002 or so, it was $750. I don't even know what Model it is. After 10 years I had to replace the electronics, and that was about $125, and it's now a PM3. Along the way, I also added a padded seat, and a gizmo that indicates heart rate on the electronic display (you still have to wear a chest band to transmit). When you consider the cost of a gym membership--the erg is a great investment. An even better investment if you get your spouse hooked on it. Space is a serious consideration. Mine is in a dusty corner of my basement. I'd like to move it upstairs, but husband ain't having none of that.
I also row at the gym at lunchtime. Today, the gym manager came up to me: "Bobbie, can you check out one of the ergs? People are saying there's a problem with it, and I know that YOU'LL know......." So, I guess I am officially the gym's crazy middle-aged woman who rows and rows and rows.

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
I was lucky to find a "C" type for $325- which I believe was a great value. My gym was selling an " extra" machine and I was the only bidder.
I prefer rowing at the gym- but there are times when I cant find the time- or times when the weather precludes a visit to the JCC.
2 weeks ago we were moving things around in order to do some foundation work on the house- and the erg was moved to a room that has a laminate floor- as opposed to it's usual location in a room with wall-to-wall carpet-it was moved to a long narrow room with a TV at one end.
So I start to erg- far away from the TV- and after about 15 minutes, I found the front of the erg butting up against the base of the TV stand.
Every 15 minutes or so, the erg was gliding about 8 feet forward- so I had to stop- move the erg back and start again.
But it did not scratch the floor. And I was able to get in a decent row.

Just think of all the money you've saved not having to buy slides!!garygOP wrote: So I start to erg- far away from the TV- and after about 15 minutes, I found the front of the erg butting up against the base of the TV stand.
Bobbie, I get stuff from a few rowing-related feeds I've subscribed to on Facebook. It's fun to see what people get up to!

Just checked and the Ancients are back in 4th place. It was exciting to pass them by earlier today. Look forward to having at them again in the morning.damselfly wrote:TEAM!! We're back in 5th! Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
I meant 5th place not 4Th although that is a realistic possibility as well as the distance is less than 500,000m between us and 4th place.damselfly wrote:TEAM!! We're back in 5th! Nice work! Like the old lion, donkey, hay riddle. In this case I'd vote for the photographer to take the paddles 1st, then the woman holding the paddles. You see a safe solution among the four without the risk of an elephant running away?
