Image Day 10...one-third of the way through this Challenge!

Good work, Lunies! Way to ski-erg and row! Whoa...I've got work to do to catch up to the average meters of our Lunie bunch!

1 FRENCH INDOOR ROWERS TEAM Virtual Club 8,369,440 252 33,212

10 Team NAS Pensacola Military Facility 2,655,842 600 4,426

Image Another episode....

Some may remember the 1960s Wooly Bully Song by Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs, with its chorus of Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully. And then there is a strange board game also called Wooly Bully in which "The country of La Guerre des Moutons (the war of sheep) is full of fields and forests. There are sheep in the fields and wolves and hunters in the forests. Each player tries to make the largest pens with his own sheep inside by placing his own tiles. You can easily close small pens, or you can be ambitious and try to build large farms... but if you cannot enclose the fields, your sheep are likely to be eaten by the big bad wolves roaming in the nearby forests. Each player's animal is secret at the beginning of the game, but the soonest you reveal it, the more points you get." This is a family board game? Hahaha. You be the sheep, and I'll be the wolf. I can hear it now. But I digress, which is indeed what happens in a bunny trail of the mind.

Image There I was, getting ready to chip up to the green...and crawling about in the grass was a very fuzzy caterpillar. I hadn't seen a caterpillar in ages. So, naturalist like, I ran for the phone camera and took a picture of this little dude. Or dudette. One member of the golfing foursome then said that the sighting of this Tiger Moth larva was a predictor of an early winter. Say what?! Caterpillars predict winter's arrival or harshness? Was this a research topic for Wiki or the Farmer's Almanac? Most of the myths around the sightings of what is called the Woolly Bear caterpillar have to do with the size and placement of its color bands. Some say that if the middle band (or the rust colored one) is the largest, then winter will be mild. Some say that the wider the width of any of the three segments, the more intense that part of winter will be. Must admit that it took me a minute to tell which end of the caterpillar was which - and is the end that moves forward the start of winter or the end of winter?! But fear not. The National Weather Service says that these caterpillars go through several moultings on their way to mothness in the spring, and that the bands width and coloration is merely a reflection of what and how well fed these little beasts are. Woolly bully indeed. Onwards.

Season meters as of 146/365 = 35,422,395 m

Total meters on the day = 312,736 m

Well, K2, it seems you're not the only one taking notice of the Woolly Bear Caterpillar. They're also getting some notice in St. Peter, Minnesota. Don't ya know that then?

Yah fer sure the guest columnist has some of it right, but to me mild winter just means that there was good food for the woollies. Oktoberfest for the ages sounds like a plan is in place to sample well. Enjoy it !

RE: Ron MacBruce - out indefinitely

Post by Kona2 » September 26th, 2014, 10:31 am

Had a message from Ron yesterday. He is currently in surgery as I write this, and we hope for best possible outcome. Btw, I used to work for a hand surgeon, plastic surgeon office - and they can do AMAZING things even in the face of terrible accidents.

Hi,
this is just to let everyone that i am going to be out of commission for the foreseeable future. i had a bad accident with my table saw. i am going to dartmouth tomorrow for surgery i will probably have at least one finger on my left hand amputated. i will need follow up surgery, including skin grafts.
ron

Thanks, Ron, for keeping us informed. Stay positive!
