How do the Satellite races work for a place on the U.S.I.R.T.?

Do interested rowers fill in a form to say they would like to try out for a place on the team? Or do “scouts” go round to colleges and ask certain talented individuals if they would like to take part.

Obviously the older guys/girls have proved themselves in the past, so do they go straight forward to the satellite races.

What happens at the races? How many attend? Is it done on e-row?

Sorry for all the questions, but am interest to see how it works on your side of the water?

Sir Pirate

I think your mixing up WIRC and USIRT selection.

if you go to a sattelite race and beat the qualifying time, you stand a chance of getting free travel to WIRC

If you want selection to USIRT (in order to get free travel to Euro Champs) you need to inform team management and prove yourself at a trial.

That's how it worked last year anyhow, it might well be different this year. I didn't check.

It is more than likely a simple system, will have to be if I will be able to understand it

Sir Pirate

U.S.I.R.T. Mr Brody, Anybody? Okay, I'm Robert Brody and I think I'm somebody.

The answer to your questions has already been posted but just to give you a little background info:

The 20 Satellite Regattas in the U.S.A. and Canada are independent entities.
They run their events as they see fit.

Concept2 USA sponsors these regattas as well as other races.

One form of sponsorship is the funding of up to 4 people from each of the 20 regattas for a roundtrip airfare to Boston for the CRASH-Bs.

Each year I set qualifying times in each of the age/weight/sex classes.

Anyone that meets or better those times at one of the Sattelite Regattas is eligible for the trip to Boston. If, as if often the case, a race has more than 4 qualifiers it is up to the race organization to choose who will represent them in Boston. Concept2 USA and myself have no role in that decision process.

Now, for the United States Indoor Rowing Team that will be competing at the European Indoor Championships in Amsterdam in December;
Interested applicants had to submit a Letter of Intent by August 4th.
Those applicants will row a 2000 meter time trial under race-like conditions
sometime in late October.
A 12 person team will be selected by early November.

Hope that answers your questions.

Robert Brody
Concept2 Indoor Race Coordinator & USIRT Manager
With regards to your statement in the box above, how do you arrive at these targets? they are very tough, surely you don't get a rower in each category meeting each qualifing target........or do you?

Out of interest, how may 19-29 Hwts in the U.S.A do you have that can row 5:48.6

Oops, thats 2 questions, sorry.

Sir Pirate
