Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
New PB for 30 mins, did 7516m.
Just tried to hold 2:00 min pace the whole way, worked hard for it towards the end!

That's a serious time. 1:43.8 pace for 5K. I did 1:45.4 at age 66 and 1:45.5 last yr at age 67. I'll never catch you.Gettingold wrote:5000 m in 17:18

I think I'm the one doing the chasing Jim. You've set the bar pretty high and created a great example for all. It's very easy to kick back, utilising age as an excuse and let your body slowing decline. There's certainly an element of comfort knowing that your aches are due to your body wearing out rather than it seizing through lack of use.
I tip my hat.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Last night at our rowing club our masters rowing squad had to do 5000m time trials on static C2 ergs. I weigh 84 kgs and I'm 52 years of age now. I recorded a time of 17:09.0 at an average pace of 1:42.9.
That currently puts me at the top of the rankings in the 50-59 age group. It's the first time I've rowed on a C2 static erg in ages as most of you may know that all my training is done on a Rowperfect. I'm happy with the result but believe next time I can go sub 17 minutes. I might give that a go in about a months time.

Caution: Static C2 ergs can ruin your technique and timing for rowing in a boat.
The best thing I ever did to improve my rowing was to sell my C2 and get a Rowperfect.

That's a pretty impressive time Roland. Hopefully you'll make it to the Pan Pacs in November. Should make for an interesting 2k event.

Nice and quick Terry
I need to try another 100m, I pulled one after a weight workout a few weeks back. I was flying, but slipped 2/3 off the seat and had to re-adjust then keep going. Still did 15.3, but I should have been sub15.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
So, Quit smoking 3 weeks ago, already feeling so much better.
Used to row on and off at gym 10 -15 min or so for cardio - was always gassed by 20 min. Didn't spend much time figuring out the machine, but have always rowed to keep each pull over 1000 cal / hr, and 32 strokes a min... never really paid much attention to distance - again, just cardio for the workout. Been mostly a weights guy, not super tho, but 209 lbs, 6.2, .... so anyways, that's my background.
After quitting smoking, i've really noticed the top end of my cardio open up. I can reach plateaus where it seems i can just keep going and dont get gassed, again, at the same 1000 + cal / hr per row, and 32 s/min. So Last week i made it 2 30 minutes, then pounded out the last min with 1700 + cal per hour rows and 35 s/min to 'gas out'.
This week, went for an arm workout first, but just bicept curls, and decided to cut it short and see what i could actually do on this machine. I Went for 45 minutes, couldn't believe it. Could have prolly gone an hour, but joints were starting to ache bad, so i decided to shut it down. Again, this is all 1000+ cal/ hr rows. So i looked at distance and made 11400 meters, took a picture and decided to figure out how good that was on the ol interweb. Found this site, see the rankings and see that hey, it's really not too bad at all!... apparently in a common measurement form it's 1.59 splits for the 45 min. so now i'm actually excited that maybe this is something that i can really get into perhaps... maybe even get a boat if i decide to stay serious enough. This community looks really cool, and i'm glad i found other people that seem seriously into this - i like stuff with lots of top end opportunity for improvement and this defintiely seems like one. Golf time might be getting some back-seat treatment hahah.
Anyways, I'm James, and I Just wanted to share this little story and give a shout out to this community. It looks like there is a lot of good archived material here that I will enjoy reading for some time! Btw, I'm In Ottawa Ontario, Can if any other people on this board are here and would like to meet.

Thanks HJS
I have seen many accounts of record times for the 100m with sub 14 second times for outright but nothing age related. I would be keen to see if there is anything for us old guys (50+)

Me neither, I have never seen training details from the top sprinters in the 50 plus. There is a uk guy who pulls around 1.19 being 50/51 now though.Gettingold wrote:Thanks HJS

100 meter is a lot about power every 1 second you get the lowpull down is 0.2 seconds more or less. Some guys pull 1.03 ........

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Hi guys There were records kept in NZ where "short course" racing including 100m and 300m was quite common - they called them World Records as no one else was racing much. When the NZIRA folded the records were saved by John Rippon and passed to Rowing NZ where they can be accessed at http://www.zeus-sport.com/ROWINGNZ/Article.aspx?ID=5183
These records are by necessity only recorded for racing results and gym starts were not recorded/allowed as the delay in starting on race software adds about 0.5 secs and therefore it is impossible to compare to gym training times in such short events.
Dougie "Citroen" Lawson kept UK records because of his racing at Basingstoke and there were some available on the UK C2 site that I think have gone since the change there. I know that Richard Steventon is interested in tracking them as well. They were only racing starts too. Dougie might add more detail. You could also have a look at the results for the Grimsby regional races as they do 100 and 300 there.
The fastest over 50 that I am aware of with a racing start is Al Hallberg who did 15.0 racing in NZ - I competed against him and he was monster strong and a genuine sprinter - even 1km was long for him. This is probably 14.5/6 in the gym. His background was as a thrower.
The fastest time recorded by the NZ guys was a 14.1 in a race I think - it was done by Forum Flyer Kiwi (now in Florida) Todd Carpenter amongst others. This equates to 13.5 ish in the gym - I think that is where Dirk Muller is at in his late 40's! Todd may know more as well as he was right in the thick of it.

Lindsay, About Al, check the old ctc s, he had a Strongman background also, but has very good results on the longer work as well, for a few years at least he made lots of meters and pulled good results upto Hm. Later on with a bit of help from Toddy he race on the shorter stuff.
