FAQ
I've tried a bunch of different genres but i've finally settled in on hip hop for my choice rowing. Rage Against the Machine also works pretty well for some shorter pieces. One thing i like to do is try and find a line in the song that applies to how i'm erging. Like in "Travellin Man" by Mos Def, he says "I'm leaaavvving..." And i just think about how i'm leaving meter 5996 behind and moving on towards the finish.

I find club techno/trance music quite engaing when erging. My top two are from Paul Van Dyk -- "Out There and Back" and "The Politics of Dancing"

Eva Cassidy died much too young. She was such a great interpreter of songs. It is a shame she wasn't discovered by the general public until after she died.

Paul S
I've been listening to "Robot Hive/Exodus" by Clutch for my last three rowing sessions. It is gut-wrenchingly awesome. "10001110101" comes along at just the right moment for my rally in a 10-k set.

Also, the beat to the Snatch theme song is good. Enjoy.

New feature in my row sessions: I downloaded some super software ($30EU - search for Polderbits) that takes my ancient vinyl lp records and painlessly puts them on cd's. Now I can work out to my collection of one-hit wonders from the 50's, 60's and 70's.

I haven't played some of the records for 20 years. Of course you do have to have a turntable to start the project...

grams

I've found that for a 2k I really do good listening to System of a Down. I also enjoy short songs during a 2k. I don't like looking at how many meters I have left and I know 2 songs is almost a 2k, so if I can play 2 songs 2 1/2 minutes long it'll make reaching the end seem a lot quicker since you're going to kill it at the end anyway so you might as well trick your mind thinking its finished a minute and a 1/2 earlier.

Simple beats, loud guitars, nothing too serious. Although I have overplayed them, Linkin Park is great for rowing.

You can turn it up loud enough to hear the quiet parts over the noise of the rower without being blasted out of your seat during the big crescendos. I tend to pick pieces that are about as long as I want to row - then I take off my glasses so I'm not tempted to monitor my progress too closely and just go.
