I was expecting people to bawl me out for just mentioning Rossini when there are some nice Mozart, Verdi, Donizetti, etc. operas. Any work by Vivaldi is good for longer rows. Stay away from Wagner. You want something happier.

If any Taffians are reading this, check out any recordings with Bryn Terfel.

Back to Rossini, you can't go wrong with La Cenerentola, especially the one with Cecelia Bartoli.

Byron
oops sorry Byron - genuine mistake. Must have been thinking of the UK board.

The Adiemus (Karl Jenkins) album is pretty good. Plus the big classical music radio station over here (Classic FM) has very little chatter and lots of music, unlike most of the others, so that's always a bonus.

Xav

Actually, the third post in this thread (mine) mentioned:

QUOTE

...depending on the workout, various bits of Orff's Carmina Burana, some of the Wagnerian overtures, Dvorak's 9th, Shostakovich's 10th, even Chaikovskii's 6th Symphony...

I respectfully disagree re some Wagner: the Handley/Royal Phil versions of the overture to Fligende Hollander (Flying Dutchman) plus their Ride of the Valkryies track make a nearly perfect background for a fast 5k: a collective 16:36 worth of fairly sublime music that -- to quote Mark Twain -- is even better than it sounds....

True, right now I'd spend the last 35 seconds of that 5k rowing in silence, but I can always dream.....

Finding something long enough to last for a full 2km (about 7 minutes for me) is hard enough, let alone finding the right tempo. The best I've come up with so far is a live version of Vamos by the Pixies. After a slowish start, about 30 to 40 seconds into the song, the drummer begins playing at 144 beats per minute and keeps it up for about 7:30 or 8:00 as the guitarists and singers do their thing. For someone erging at 36spm race pace this would be 2 beats per drive and 2 beats per recovery.

Rick

Notes from today's half marathon:

Stereo MC's "Connected" can be good and bad for rowing depending on which track you are listening to. #9 "Pressure" is perfect for mid-way through the piece - "gotta keep it up, keep up the pressure". And for close to the end, #12 "Don't Let Up" is just about perfect.

A word of warning, you do NOT want to hear track #8 "Playing with Fire" when you're tired in the middle of a long row. The words "You're playing with fire - don't end up on the funeral pyre" just don't inspire when you're wondering how long you can hold the pace.

More random thoughts:

It's a bit mindless, but for some good beats to accompany a fast row, the Crystal Method's "Legion of Boom" provides a great distraction.

For the more classically inclined, I heartily recommend Vivaldi's Four Seasons. The von Karajan recording with Anne Sophie Mutter as first violin is timeless. In particular, track #6 "Presto (Summer)" is very inspiring when you want to dig deep.

Classic-rock-folk-golden oldies I burn 65 minute cds of each venue for my long rows. Then I don't have to watch the clock; I know I've done my hour when the cd stops. Or 2 hours for 2 cds. Alright, I'm rather new to this, so I haven't tried a lot of different music, but so far the best CD for me is Moby's Play. Boy was I surprised when I played the Crash-B video: they use the same music!
