All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 5.13.14

Post by Kona2 » May 14th, 2014, 10:30 am

Back in the day....there were Saturday morning cartoons....followed by the s-c-a-r-y, then somewhat laughable horror movies. Godzilla was one of the favorites, and now back in a new release....yikes!

Welcome back for the 2015 season to Tim P !

We may have to follow the horses to find Richard T this week. The Preakness, second leg of the Triple Crown, is this Saturday...he must be looking over the horses. Will California Chrome get the Black-Eyed Susans? (Last year's readers will remember that the Black-Eyed Susan garland really isn't black-eyed susans, but rather Viking daisies with centers painted with black lacquer to resemble black-eyed susans ... horrors and subterfuge!) Pretty sure that today is the day that the post positions are drawn for Saturday's race... Here's the info on the Preakness Draw
Starting post positions for the 139th Preakness® Stakes will be drawn Wednesday evening, May 14, 2014. Pimlico racing officials will use a pill pull, which employs a small numbered ball in a blind draw, to decide post positions for the middle jewel (middle jewel sounds much better) of racing's Triple Crown. Now to figure out what this pill pull is....all I can say is be careful not to put your eyes out when you google that phrase. Pill pull sounds like how they do the lottery numbers.

The Preakness is limited to 14 starters. Seventeen of the last 20 years have produced double-digit starters. Preakness is run two weeks after the Derby, and three weeks before the Belmont Stakes. Each race gets a little bit longer than the previous. The Derby was 1 and 1/4 miles, and the Preakness is 1 3/16 miles or 9.5 furlongs.

Season meters as of 13/365 = 4,722,715 m

Total meters on the day = 348,799 m

Oars in space (participation) = 41 percent

Race Lengths for Triple Crown

Post by Kona2 » May 14th, 2014, 5:05 pm

Ha! A miscue. Preakness is shortest of the three races, Derby in the middle and Belmont is the longest race.

Kentucky Derby, run over the 1 1⁄4-mile (2.0 km) dirt track at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky;
Preakness Stakes, run over the 1 3⁄16-mile (1.9 km) dirt track at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland;
Belmont Stakes, run over the 1 1⁄2-mile (2.4 km) dirt track, the longest in thoroughbred racing, at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.

So...should we expect times under 2 minutes?

I emailed C2 yesterday, but haven't heard back yet. With all the strum und drang I was at least able to get enough meters to go over 28 MM lifetime. Only about 12 million more to go to circumnavigate the globe :?

That should only take you a year and half at the rate you go. So by next year's Holiday challenge B)

Fortunately our teammates often notice things that slip by the rest of us...and David A caught the reference to a biggie milestone (28 MM) by Ron...and upon seeing his reference, I also saw the sturm and dang terminology...and while I "got" the idea, I had no clue where Ron dug that reference up.

Whoop, whoop and hooyah! Congratulations, Ron, on achieving TWENTY-EIGHT MILLION Lifetime Meters! WOWZER! We wish you many more - especially since you are on a dual journey to the moon and to circumnavigate the Earth! Well done, Buckaroo.

Global Marathon Challenge officially ends today...of course, entries are always accepted here as we celebrate full and half moons year round!

I'm seriously impressed with the number of Lunies who have completed full marathons, and those who have completed halfs. Some teammates have completed these more than one time. No way that I could complete even a half marathon...ok...at really really slow speeds I could...this year. Discovered that project work means that you don't always get exercise on a machine - sometimes your exercise is whatever it takes to get that part of the project completed. Then there were the trips to the Hardware Store. This is a place of mystery, where the uninitiated can wander the aisles for literally hours looking for something that you don't know the name of, that might be located in electrical or maybe it's actually in Hardware. My eyes glazed over almost as soon as I entered the store, and I learned to just make a beeline for the store assistants.

Meanwhile, two more teammates have checked in for the 2015 season! This is awesome news! Welcome back to David W (GBR) and Tim K! Great to see you on the roster!

Often in Tucson about the time that the Gambel Quail are laying eggs...and I was on egg watch a few years ago. One year the quail chose one of Mom's flower pots for a nesting area. Each day, one or two more eggs would appear. I never saw the chicks hatch, and as small as the eggs are...knew that they would seem somewhat microscopic. The adult ones have a feather that curls forward.

Image

Finally was able to observe the Gambel chicks - on a golf course in Nevada! The babies were about two inches high, and pretty darn fast. The parent quail would try to put them into safety by loading them into a shrub....of course, the babies were running out the back so it was shrub to shrub.

I drive my wife crazy with the obscure references :lol:
It is appropriate that you used a work meeting reference. I often used the term Sturm und Drang to describe our often contentious weekly lab meetings. I also used a quote from "The Bard": "-----full of sound and fury signifying nothing" :?
I hear you on going to the hardware store. What is wrong with these sales people when they can't help you locate the thingy that goes on whatmacallit :?:
