Ronmardix, i am coming up on 54 years of age and am just looking for a good workout routine to stay healthy. I have considered competing in the police/fire games in June as they have a 2k competition. I am just struggling to put all of this together. I can pretty much sit down and row any distance that i want but really dont know what a good maintenance program is. I have completed Petes beginner plan doing 4 rows a week with ease and not sure where to go.

Hi Team,

I am thinking about getting a C2 SkiErg for cross-training purposes, and I am wondering if any of you have one, and how do you like it?

Thanks!

If your goal is general health and not competition, then the workouts that you describe are probably sufficient. 30-40 minutes per day, 4 or 5 days a week should certainly keep you healthy if you include proper diet. Mixing up the daily sessions between long & short steady rows and some intervals will keep things interesting.

If you decide to compete, then you will need a more structured plan, but at this stage, if it's just general health that you're after, then you will be fine with what you're doing.

I agree. That is a good mix of rowing. I could see a schedule like,
Sun: long row; Mon: Rest; Tues: easy row; Wed: Intervals; Thurs: Weights; Fri: Medium row; Sat: rest.

Rest after a low row is best, because a long row can be tiring.

One could compete off of this plan. The medium row could become shorter and faster (tempo run).

I feel your pain. I had to take a week off after the recent shoveling exercises - my back started to spasm again.

Of course, now we're at 45 degrees and the fun begins: deep lakes of messy, slippery slush. At least we don't have to shovel the slushy stuff.

So New York is at 56 inches so far this year. The average is 21" and the record is 72" set in the late 90's.

Hello fellow erg-o-vites I haven't posted in a while, so I think it's time. I have embraced my exercise obsession on a new level. Been cross training nearly non-stop. It has impacted my rowing production to some degree, but I am planning my C2 rowing for the rest of the 2014 season. I started rowing on August 1, 2013 and my goal is to make at least 1.5 million meters by the end of the 2014 Season. I plan to participate in Mud Season Madness and the World Erg Challenge, I have really enjoyed being part of the team. I hope with a full year ahead, I will be able contribute 2 million meters to the team in 2015.

I have started doing some really exhilarating cross-training routines. Tonight I rowed 7000 meters, broken up into 5 parts and interleaved with sets of Kettle bell exercises . So 5 sets of Front Squats with 2 kettle bells , 5 sets of kettle bell swings, and the 3 sets of one-arm clean and press with one kettle bell (3 sets with each arm). After an initial 10 minute row, I started working in the kettle bell sets. So I now have two favorite pieces of equipment at the gym, the C2 rower and kettle bells

Well good night all, hope you are enjoying the Winter Olympics. At just a sliver under 55, I sometimes wonder if I am crazy for working out so hard, but I listen to my body and am generally feeling stronger and more energized than I have in decades.

It's great to hear of your progress, John! And your enthusiasm is contagious. I am going to be getting a SkiErg within the month, and I am going to blow the dust off the weight set and start using that a bit as well. In addition to the rower, of course!

I'm finding that as I get older, and as I row so much, that I start to get aches more frequently. My left hip hurts. My side hurts. I figure if I mix it up and cross-train more then I won't ache as much in these areas. (I'll ache in new places! )

Keep up with the great progress!
