Hi, I'm looking for information regarding my college freshman who went to the emergency room last night. Just prior to that, while discussing her infected blister, I casually reminded her an infection with streaks was to be seen to immediately. When she paused and said "What do you mean by streaks...?" I felt a chill!
So now she's been told to rest, elevate her arm when she sleeps, wear a sling and not write (it's her right hand)for a week.
She's worried about her crew season which is over at the end of October, anyway.
Is this the way it goes and just start again next year?

John, cellulitis is not cellulite!!! I copied a definition of it from www.mayoclinic.com. />
Cellulitis

By Mayo Clinic staff

Cellulitis (sel-u-LI-tis) is a potentially serious bacterial infection of your skin. It appears as a swollen, red area of skin that feels hot and tender, and it may spread rapidly.

Skin on the lower legs or face is most commonly affected by this infection, though cellulitis can occur on any part of your skin. The infection may only be superficial, but it may also affect the tissues underlying your skin and can spread to your lymph nodes and bloodstream.

Left untreated, the spreading bacterial infection may rapidly turn into a life-threatening condition. That's why it's important to recognize the signs and symptoms of cellulitis and to seek immediate medical attention if they occur.

There is quite a bit of community acquired Methicillin-resistanct Staphyloccocus aureus cellulitis going around all over the country these days, particularly in young (ish) athletes. It often begins as a small abscess, frequently with a central grey area of necrotic tissue, and then progresses to cellulitis. Alternatively, it can begin as cellulitis and progress to a large abscess (furuncle). This is a very important diagnosis to rule in or out, as the bacteria does NOT respond to the usual antibiotics given for Staph, but does respond to high doses of oral Bactrim DS (2 tablets, twice per day). Ideally the cellulitis/abscess should be cultured and the patient should be seen by someone who knows about this sort of thing, meaning an up to date ER physician or an infectious disease specialist.

Whether this is MRSA or not, this is a serious bacterial infection that requires antibiotic therapy, especially given that she already has lymphangitic streaking. If she has not been started on an antibiotic, she needs to go back to a serious hospital- not some sort of student health facility. Do not sit around on this!!

Andrew

No wonder there are so many sick people in this country, in particular those who listen to idiot doctor quacks.

THIS IS SERIOUS, total agreement with afolpe - she should go to a real ER and not just a student health clinic! My husband contracted cellulitis twice in the past 5 years, both times from stingray stabs while surfing. Each time it took a serious course of IV antibiotics (10+ days) to cure him. Also he developed a very high fever very quickly, had his leg swell & turn technicolor (purples, reds, greens...), and became quite weak for several days.

As we found later, cellulitis can result in amputation (luckily not for him) or even be fatal. Needs serious treatment right away.
MP

I don't know what your problem is, and frankly I don't especially care, but you need to be able to recopgnize when you have no idea what you are talking about, and when you might be offering potentially very harmful advice. We are talking about a young girl with what appears to be an as yet untreated, serious bacterial infection. This is not the time for absurd Internet banter.

Andrew

Thanks to Andrew and Mary, for pointing out that cellulitis is caused by the stab of a stingray, and only treatable by use of antibiotics that only kill one or two strains of bacteria while they run down the immune system.

Of course intelligence doesn't have anything to do with this, especially where massive medical egos and trillions of dollars of medical quackery are involved.

How on earth does one come to hate the medical community so much? I just don't get it.

Thank you all for your concern. My daughter was sent to the emergency room immediately by the college health office and was given antibiotics to start then and there.
However, I will persue this aggressively. Thank you again.

So, can we assume that your anger has something to do with the way cancer is treated?

af
