Way to Row RonnieKona2 wrote:Congratulations, Ronnie, on achieving HALF A MILLION meters in the Virtual Team Challenge....and getting that special bathtub...you're lucky number 7 ! Flying the flag of Jamaica!
Thank you! You are correct, this is my first ever full marathon. While I'm a little sore today, I'm really dreading tomorrow. Maybe it's because I'm still new at this, but I don't know how people do marathons on a regular basis. The time commitment alone is prohibitive - much less the physical tax. I tip my cap to those of you who churn those out frequently.Kona2 wrote: ... Way to row, Douglas !! Well done !
I'm pretty sure this is a FIRST ever! Shine on, shine on, shine on !! Definitely a hooyah moment !!
Many of us, after completing the first one...swear that it will be a cold day before we do another...and then the marathon challenge comes around or Marathon Fever sweeps through the Good Ship Luna-Tic, and dang if we're not back on the erg or the ski-erg cranking out another one! I think it takes psychological grit, and a good seat cushion. Some watch movies (note that is a plural) while they get through it...and stand up and walk around for at least 30 seconds every hour or so that you're on task. Mega-distances aren't for everyone - and they are especially tough for those who are doing their workouts in a gym where you can't always get the machine for longer than 30 minutes or an hour....or you can't take a quick bathroom break because it's too far away at the gym (no porta potties along the erg course!). That's why we celebrate them big time...don't forget to send in for your MARATHON pin....because you can get one a rowing year, and will be eligible to get another one in May 2014 during the marathon challenge...(just planting a thought there...I'll do one if Minnie does)....dgoforth wrote:

Thank you for all of the info on the marathons! While I like rowing, I can't imagine that I would be nearly invested without my beloved Netflix. For years, I've asked friends to recommend Netflix hosted TV series that they feel are highly addictive/entertaining/fast paced. I then adopt those series as my cardio shows where the rule is that I can only watch them when I'm on the treadmill, treadclimber, or as of October, the rowing machine. Maybe it's my personality type, but I am highly motivated to work out in order to see what happens next in one of my shows. With that in mind, it helps to pick a series with season/series long story lines to help coax you into that additional 47 minutes on the machine. It also helps if it includes a lot of details and dialogue to pull me and help me forget that I'm on the machine.Kona2 wrote:

Oh, you are so ON, Mz. Astrogator. May's a Marathon date ... even if I have to fit it around that bowling-alley wedding we're attending in New Orleans!Kona2 wrote: ...don't forget to send in for your MARATHON pin....because you can get one a rowing year, and will be eligible to get another one in May 2014 during the marathon challenge...(just planting a thought there...I'll do one if Minnie does)...
Gasp ... a true kindred spirit. I'm with you, on most of your selection. I only got through the Luther pilot ... he's a disturbing man! I rewatch Firefly at least twice a year, plus Serenity ... I have Justified in my go-to list. And, I must admit, Hawaii Five-O.dgoforth wrote: ... I can't imagine that I would be nearly invested without my beloved ... - Dead Like Me (not sure I would do this one again)
- Firefly
- Sons of Anarchy (completely underrated drama with cliffhangers on nearly every episode)
- Breaking Bad
- "Luther" a great detective series from the BBC. In fact, 3.5 episodes of Luther carried me through the marathon.
... here are a few other series that I wish I would have saved for cardio ... :
- 24
- The Sopranos
- House of Cards
- Sherlock Holmes (newer BBC version) - for your longer sessions
