Another Reindeer Claimed !

Post by Kona2 » December 11th, 2013, 11:32 pm

Stephen W lives in an interesting part of the world - Cheshire, GBR. In fact, all of our teammates live in interesting parts of the world. Stephen's reindeer last year was Cheshire...not just for the area itself, but also because Lewis Carroll of Alice fame had a house there...and we know about the Cheshire Cat who disappears except for the smile....This year, though, treks about the Cheshire region have led me to The Mersey Forest. Now this Mersey Forest is not exactly the Sherwood Forest of old. The regional parks website says The Mersey Forest is a growing network of woodlands and green spaces across Cheshire and Merseyside, which has been creating 'woodlands on your doorstep' for 20 years. It's a Community Forest area that started a a focused long-term tree planting program to improve the local environment. These programs started in the late 1990s and now provide a network of trails for walking, biking and cycling and horseback rides (everyone defers to the horses in the US on trails...I wonder if this is true in the UK as well?). Very cool environmental program!

The bunny trail of this is that seeing the name "Mersey" and not knowing whether it was pronounced as Mercy or Mare-sy or some other item, sent me down the trail to a silly song about Mairzy Doats.

Mairzy doats and dozy doats
And liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too,
Wouldn't you?
(Repeat)

If the words sound queer and funny to your ear,
A little bit jumbled and jivey,
Sing "Mares eat oats and does eat oats
And little lambs eat ivy."

Oh mairzy doats and dozy doats
And liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too,
Wouldn't you?

Congratulations, Stephen, on earning the Concept2 donation and freeing up your reindeer! Now...onto the antler lights!

Pinnacle of all the reindeer awards...

Post by Kona2 » December 11th, 2013, 11:37 pm

Well, Richard T has tapped out the reindeer award bank as he has already rowed 500K during this Challenge (save some meters for the January Virtual Teams Challenge, too) ... and is surely generating LOTS of Concept2 donation $$$. Yep, with the 500K, Richard has the reindeer, the antler lights, the flashing harness, the tail wag...and now the ear wag (flirty reindeer that Dasher is). That's a lot of meters! CONGRATULATIONS!

Another Reindeer Claimed!

Post by Kona2 » December 11th, 2013, 11:58 pm

I suspect that David T can provide better tales of the history of Sherborn MA than Reindeer Central can invent. Sherborn is still somewhat rural, with many residents fighting to maintain its rural character in the face of escalating land prices and taxes. For many years, the apples grown in the area were pressed into what was called Champagne Cider that was exported as far east as Belgium and England (according to the town history site). One of the things that I found interesting was that the town operates with minimal salaried city officials, and uses an open town meeting where all the citizens vote on major expenditures and policies.

Amazing, I missed two days (which included visiting the PGB's preschool class, and making Grinch kabobs with a couple-dozen 3-5 year olds; I got a real workout with that little gig!) and the luna caribou have expanded into an impressive thundering herd. It looks like some of those podium reindeer (inspirational meters ... well rowed!) will need more bling ... or, maybe some Christmas elves, cavorting around in the background!

I grew up singing Mairzy Doats nonsense, and had no idea there were "real" words involved!
Mares eat oats ... the things one learns on K2's bunny trails! (Now, about that "kiddley divey" ... ?)

Ah. The translation would be "and kid's eat or like ivy, too..." A different kind of greenery ingestion than the grinch kabobs... :D
