You may think this is a joke but ...

One thing that has worked well for me when I need to fall asleep quickly is to shift my eyes from left to right, and back again repeatedly. I begin by slowly shifting my eyes as far to either side as possible, then follow with shorter, more rapid movements that usually end up lasting less than a minute. My theory is that this type of movement simply speeds the mind's progression into a REM type sleep.

I can't remember exactly how/why I figured this out but it puts me to sleep very quickly every time. I think there is a child's fairy tale that involves counting sheep as they jump a fence that would have the same effect for most. New Zealanders may feel the need to run a cold shower though!

I find it especially useful in the middle of the day when I only have time for a very short (2 to 3 minute) cat-nap. It is amazing how many weird and convoluted dreams one can have in such a short time frame. Even more amazing is how refreshed I feel after just a couple minutes of REM.

Did you consider training at night and sleeping later in the morning? I usually row at night and fall asleep almost instantly.

Also, make sure you aren't ingesting any sugar or caffeine for several hours before bedtime. Nop chocolate ice cream in bed
