All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 11.08.13

Post by Kona2 » November 9th, 2013, 12:05 pm

Welcome back to returning teammate Tim S! Great to see your name on the roster!

Image MORE COWBELL ! One of the fun things about organized events is the volunteers that make that event such a whoop, whoop and hooyah feeling for the participants...and surely one of the most audible ways that the volunteer spirit is expressed is the clanging of the cowbells as you approach a finish line or a rest stop. Seems right that the winners of the SkiErg Sprint Challenge will receive cowbells to ring !

SKIERG Sprints: We may have some teammates participating - because we have some skiergers!

How it works: race 1000 meters on the SkiErg at your club, gym, school or home November 8–10. Post your time to the Concept2 logbook by 5 p.m. ET Monday, November 11, 2013. The winners of each age group will receive custom engraved cowbells to help ring in the snow season. Prizes will also be awarded for the top three times in each age group.

Season meters as of 192/365 = 60,231,129 m

Total meters on the day = 280,939 m

Oars in space (participation) = 20 percent

Hah! I just got home after my regular Saturday volunteer gig at our local library. There were some kids, turning in their books from a reading challenge "event" ... I felt the need for some silent (or Very Understated) cowbells ... :)

Works for me too. I had to refresh my memory on the Pluto decision. So even though Pluto orbits the sun, and even though it has sufficient gravitational pull to maintain its shape, and even have moons (but I don't want to get all luna-tic about that), it was decided that it should not be considered a planet because it didn't "clear its neighborhood" - it doesn't demonstrate enough gravitational dominance to clear away other objects that are somewhat nearby, other objects in the Kuiper Belt, one of which was found to be even bigger than Pluto. Seems a marketing problem to me. Instead of trying to merely save Pluto's planetary designation, we should elevate its status.
Pluto, the friendly planet... Why do we have to go to the edge of the solar system to find a planet that knows how to share its space?

And this orbit dominance talk seemed like it might be trying to cut a fine line. Made me think of the sci-fi notion of a Counter-Earth, sharing our orbit, but exactly always at an exactly opposite point so we couldn't see it. Never occurred to me that one consequence of such a discovery was that the Earth might lose its planetary status (for not aggressively pursuing this other body in its orbit). Time to sound the alarm, folks. Pluto is just the beginning...

Hope to hear more about the 10155 story. If there's a rowing flashmob in the works, count me in.
