My times for this year were all done in a short span to get some times in the rankings. I did an event every 3 days in May. The 10k was the first part of a halfmarathon, so I could have gone somewhat faster had I been intending to stop at that point. I haven't trained for and gone for an all out 10k for quite a long time.
John,

That explain everything! Moreover, you were also younger when you set your 10K PB.
You are quite fortunate to be able to run at your age. I can no longer run more than an occasional 8k because my knees hurt. :(

All the best!

Can you give your thoughts about a 1 year training (so globaly) for a given (imagianairy) erger:

Age 30, M, 6.3 weight 200 pounds, 15 % fat,
2k 6.50 5 k 18 flat. The man now trains 3/4 times a week. A mixture off endurance and strenght.
He wants to row the upcoming year. 5/6 times/week, max 90 min/training.
His goal is to improve his own 2 k time.

I dont really have any issue with the PERathlon or the NONathlon as they both are personal projects of their creators who have decided to share them with the wider community in the desire that they might bring a bit of pleasure to some (for this they should be commneded) .... neither should really be taken that seriously or as a substitute for self assesment of progress / performance. If the creators choose to portray them as something else that is their choice.

My opinion is that it is non-sensical for all but a very few in our sport to make decisions on training efficacy by measuring ones times against the WR performance but no harm as a bit of fun. There is only one objective standard that is relevant and that is your own times, as only they are a product of your personal situation.

I first got the idea for the PERathlon method at the age of 14 or so.

When I got into running, I was often bored in the classes and would spend my time calculating my percentages of the world records for various events. this was done in ink, long division etc in the margins and inside the covers of the books. I don't know why I did it in the books and not on paper but I did. Maybe because it was more permanent. I still have some of the books, and the calculations in the margins.

One of these books has two of my favorite stories at that time in it, "The Pedestrian", by Ray Bradbury, and "Of Missing Persons", by Jack Finney. Another one I came to like more recently and gave a speech about a few years ago is, "How High The Moon", by Ellen Rawlings.

"Of missing persons" told of a man who went out walking at night, seeing absolutely no one else as he walked. All he would see of the houses was the flicker of giant screen TV's on the walls, and no cars. No one was out driving at night either. Then he heard the whirl of a car coming up behind him and a voice, that asked what he was doing. A door opened and the voice told him abrubtly to "put up your hands!", and then "get in the back"! The only robotic police car in a city of millions of people had happened upon him. People didn't do such strange things as walking any more.

It's a good book, full of great stories. Were we allowed to just read, rather than listening to boring lectures, then we could have benefitted quite a bit more.

There was a guy in class who would write FDR! in big letters on the black board. I didn't know why he did that but then the teacher came in and would lecture to us for awhile, then he'd turn around to see the FDR! on the blackboard, swear under his breath and say "who keeps writing this nonsense!". Then the guy would raise his hand and ask, "Sir, can you tell us about FDR?" Sometimes the teacher would go on a rant and then catch himself, saying we needed to stick to the lesson. Apparently he hated FDR with a passion. I didn't even know who he was. Every time this happened I'd be cracking up more and more inside, hardly containing myself to keep from bursting out laughing and rolling around on the floor. One day I decided to try this myself. I had just finished writing FDR! in big letters on the chalk board, as the teacher walked in catching me with the chalk in my hand and said, "So you're the one who's been doing this!"

Competition

Post by rowmyboat » May 4th, 2006, 12:16 am

I finally found some time to peruse this site and in particular this subject, very interesting comments, some negative, some positive. John, I admire your patience and determination (and brilliance) in producing this Perathlon. When I have a spare moment I'll work my times out.
I'm interested in anything to improve my times and as I only have 3 competitions to enter during a year my interest in training has to be sustained somehow. I'm a keen participator of the Nonathlon, keep a watchful eye on the Concept2 Records (and some of their challenges) and I'm interested in anything to keep me keen.
So what, if it's not 100% accurate, the challenges are there for those that are interested and one can strive for better performances in a number of ways.
I have to rely on our local gym (who, by the way, only have 1 of the latest rowing machines) - I have no local rowers to compete with but find the rowing machine an amazing piece of equipment to keep the whole body fit and healthy. I started rowing about 4 years ago and have improved my times each year. This year I'm into a new age group and I'm aiming for 2 World All-time Records (I've managed to be in the top 10 or so over this past year on the record site).
I have never considered Watts (got enough to think about with that too!) but I enjoy setting targets and reaching them so decided last year that age was no barrier to success.
I'm in the 'aged' category as some put it, but in mind and body I still feel as though I'm in my forties and my times are competitive with that age group. I have a theory that because I now have no children at home, I can now put some effort into a sport of my own and there is no reason whatsoever why I can't build up my strength and with a positive attitude and determination, and help from people like you and Paul, build up enough enthusiasm to achieve what I'm setting out to do.
If I don't write into this training forum very often it's because I work full-time, like to go biking with my husband and spend 4 or 5 sessions at the gym a week. I have no computer at home and time is limited during working hours.

Keep up the good work, I'll be interested in another way of challenging my rowing progress. In the meantime I'll be trying to climb the Nonathlon ladder a little more this year too!!

I hope folk get behind your project, another way of viewing improvements, it must be good.

John, I can't believe you're still writing about this. About 2 years ago, I noted this was an interesting observation about comparing times, but it still doesn't seem relevant for anyone who had trained for more than 6 months. You've picked an odd thing to spend your life on.
