I suppose each of us has different motivations and goals for FTC. A couple off the top of my head would be: participation, being a part of something beyond ourselves, a chance to row one's self silly, etc. Those probably apply to me, but

for me, FTC is a chance to shift training directions a little bit and concentrate on distance - I get permission in a way. I usually do around 25K a week, but with FTC that ramps up to 50K. Instead of doing intervals, I try to sneak some faster workouts in the midst of the more erging. I used that strategy last year when I was with CrossfitDecatur and now this year with TimbukTOO.

Those faster efforts resulted in five season best times during this years FTC:
500m @1:33.3; 2k: 6:48.8 @1:42.2; 5K: 17:58.2 @1:47.8; 6K: 21:47.1 @!:48.9; 30min: 8218 @1:49.5. I doubt very seriously that I would have done those times without the extra motivation of FTC. I wanted to try for more bests, but I ran out of gas in the last few days.

Re: biking. This is the time of year that I start cutting back on biking quite a bit. When I was in my forties even early fifties, it seemed like exercise volume was never an issue. Now, at 67, it is. It simply takes more recovery time. I really cannot seriously train for best erg times and bike as usual.

I've seen several commentaries on motivation for the FTC. A lot of them revolve around a new commitment to exercise, losing weight, etc - all admirable. For me, I've been committed to performance exercise for over fifty years. But even I look for a boost. FTC seems to do that. I'm looking forward to sustaining the bump that FTC has given me. I just wanted to share a slightly different take on FTC.

PS. Those are some mighty expensive T-shirts. I would think $20 would be more like it. But then I'm not an uber capitalist.

My gym at work held a Rowing Regatta yesterday--best time for 2,000 meters. I wasn't even going to enter, because I'm a Long, Steady Distance rower, and not really a sprinter. And geez, I'm in my mid-50s. But I was happy with my time, a pb. And this morning I found I won in my category (female faculty/staff). Whooo hooo, I get my photo on the gym wall, and a pint drinking glass! I'd rather they pad the erg seats! :lol:

Great job! I use a folded gym towel to pad the seat at my gym and it works like a charm for me.

As a relative newbie to erging I have a question. Are distances and split times on a C2 adjusted based on the damper setting? I have played around a bit with the settings and noticed I feel my arms and legs a bit more after a row when I set the damper higher. That makes sense since there is more drag to pull. What I am wondering is if this translates into more distance on each stroke. So does a stroke with the damper set at 10 get you "virtually" farther than a stroke set on 3?

I am a bit behind you @450k, but that is my goal too; so let's spur each other on. By the end of October I should easily get to somewhere between 550-600k. I also want to shoot for at least 400k in the holiday challenge! We can do it!

Wow I can't get over some of the numbers put up.... I am just amazed I was able to break 800k for the challenge, I know when I get my rower at home I will be put up some serious numbers then... : :mrgreen: I get some funny looks at the club when I am sitting and sweating my butt off for 2 hours when some come sit down and put in a couple of minutes and get off without very little effort. Oh what they are missing. Once I do get a rower and I feel it will be by then end of this year... I see my 100k row coming.. I feel strong and confident that I can break the 8hrs or less mark. I bought my wife a NordicTrak. We had one for a while and I couldn't get her off it. since she enjoys doing aerobic classes and body pump classes her time on the rower have dropped.... She is disappointed by that but When I sit and row I just don't like doing less then 2 hours unless it intervals and I will do 500m/1 minute rests for the hour that she is in class. Man those are real lung and heart burners. I am just Rambling LOL right now.. I just want to say that I really enjoy this team and all the interaction on the message board and Izz and Lisa taking charge of those....

Oh not matter how many meters you do.... Do it with great form and you will go far...

I dunno the answer to this one, Bob -- Izz or the Jims or Andy or Ron want to weigh in on this one?
